Five (5) Tips for Writing a Professional Resume/CV.

1. Relevance Experience
2. The Right Skills
3. Quantifiable Achievements
4. ATS-Friendly
5. Impeccable Formatting

1. Relevant Experience:
Make sure that the jobs, experience and achievements/awards that you include are relevant to the position you're applying for.

2. The Right Skills:
This is a great time to run wild with those keywords from the job description. For example if they're looking for someone with experience in Business Analysis, be sure to list it in your resume's skills section.

3. Quantifiable Achievements:
Your workplace accomplishments tell the story of the unique value you bring to an organization. Stay away from dry descriptions of job duties. Use numbers to help contextualize your achievements.

E.g. I led implementation of 400 million Naira institutional capacity building project...

4. ATS-Friendly:
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is a piece of software employers use to collect, scan, organize and rank applications. The key to getting your CV past ATS and into the hands of hiring managers are smart keyword usage and good formatting.

5. Impeccable Formatting:
Fornatting a resume/CV so that it looks professional amd attractive is important. Choose a CV template that suits your profession but try and avoid colour blocks, images, borders, and caligraphic fonts as these are common deterrent to ATS.

Do you need a WINNING CV that will sell you to recruiters. Send a WhatsApp message to 09050814448

Negotiating your starting salary is important, if you received an offer below your expectations!

An offer should not be taken away from you for negotiating, but they might say no - then it’s your choice to take the job or not.

The recruiter called saying you are invited to the next round of interviews. YAY! 🎉

And now what...?⠀

🕵️ Time for the detective in you to shine. 🕵️
Start researching! You'll want to look at:⠀

1️⃣ Company culture⠀
Explore the company's careers site and website to figure out if you really want to work with them.⠀

2️⃣ Company news⠀
Google is your friend here. Are there any news, company updates, financial information, industry information that you need to know?⠀

3️⃣ Social Accounts⠀
You will also want to look at their social accounts. What does the culture look like, how to they treat their employees, how do they respond to their customers? Also look at sites like Glassdoor and read employee reviews.⠀

4️⃣ Salary⠀
You need to be clear on your salary expectations. Do your research and figure out the average salary for the position for someone with your years of experience. If you are considering relocation, sites like Numbeo will also help with the cost of living.⠀

5️⃣ The interviewer⠀
You will want to start on LinkedIn and then expand your search. How long have they been with the company, what questions will they possibly ask, do you have anything in common, do you have any common connections?⠀

👉 Did you find this helpful? If Yes, Like this post and follow @careermattersng for more tips 💙.

And if you got an upcoming interview. Kindly comment below for advice.

How To Be More Successful In Your Career: Tips And Tricks

Just because there are few opportunities in your career path doesn’t mean you should be contented with where you are. Outlined below are some of the ways you can grow your career.

1.) Learn from the more experienced and qualified employees in the company. This doesn’t necessarily have to be in your line of work. Take time to learn their various jobs and how it is done to broaden your overall skill.

2.) Try several jobs to help broaden your skill and grow laterally. This will come in handy, especially if there aren’t many positions above you.

3.) Attend training sessions and classes to grow your knowledge. New technologies and effective strategies are always cropping up. The only way you can remain relevant in your field is to stay up to date on the industry. Workshops, training sessions, and additional classes can help in this.

4.) Take part in book clubs with fellow employees to grow your knowledge, concepts, understand various terminologies, etc.

5.) Look for a mentor in a different sector. There’s no better way to learn a new skill than learning it from a mentor or fellow employee. All you need is to show interest in their job, and most will offer to train you.

More Ways To Grow Your Career
1.) Set realistic goals and work towards them

Make a list of what you want to achieve, set and deadline, then start working towards it. Setting goals and working towards them is a tried method for succeeding in anything.

2.) Create a timeline and milestones

Having a mentor or boss by your side will make it easier to achieve your goals on time. The mentor will also guide you through the way.

3.) Take advantage of company programs

Many companies provide a platform for employees to grow their careers. If your company does, use these programs to your advantage. If not, pursue career development informally.

4.) Own your career path

Most employees will talk about career paths in annual meetings or whenever they get the chance to. Some employers also offer to assist with money and time for their staff to gain the necessary qualifications. Whatever the incentive is, learn to own your career path.

5.) Write a plan

You need a solid plan to achieve any goals and aspirations you might have. It would thus be advisable to come up with a solid plan and write it down.

THINGS TO REMOVE FROM YOUR CV IN 2023

1. Career Objective - When you start your CV off with a Career Objective, it shifts the focus away from what YOU can do / why they should hire you / what problem you can solve. Most career objectives are generic and only provide the reader with what YOU are seeking or looking for. "Seeking a role that will enable me to utilise my skills within a growing company". Sound familiar? Do not make the intro about what you want, but rather what makes you the best candidate in relation to the role you're applying for.

2. Personal Information - This includes your Home Address, ID Number, number of dependents, health info, date of birth, marital status, religion, etc. What else am I missing?

3. Photo. Unless a huge part of you getting the job is dependent on your looks, then leave this off. Recruiters, like everyone else, have inherent biases, and you don't want to be a position where focus is drawn on your appearance, rather than your actual skills, experience etc.

4. Additional documents. DO NOT combine any documents such as your certificates, copy of your ID to your CV. Your CV should be a file on its own. If the job application requests the docs to be sent, then attach them as seperate files.

5. Buzzwords. These are words that, as a result of being over-used, have now lost their impact. Words/phrases such as, "hard-working, "motivated", "punctual", "diligent". Imagine when Hiring Managers / recruiters have to scan through dozens of CVs, and every candidate claims to be a "hard-working and motivated individual"? It does nothing to help you stand out from other candidates.

6. Graphics such as logos, charts and tables. These might be great for a human to look at, but not for the robot (ATS) that needs to initially scan your CV when you've applied online. These kind of graphics are unreadable to the ATS (depending on which ATS it is).

7. Unnecessary fluff. Your CV does not need a cover page and it doesn't need the title, "Curriculum Vitae of...". Recruiters spend less than 6 seconds reviewing each CV. You’ve got 6 seconds to show them that it’s worth their time to continue reading. Get to the point!

8. Long paragraphs. These will make your CV hard to read. Your intro summary should be 2 - 3 sentences MAX. Your responsibilities should always be in bullet point form. And please, DO NOT copy all that text from your cover letter and include it on your CV.

9. Your life story. Your resume should not resemble a Wikipedia page, with details of every single thing you've done throughout your existence. Essentially, it should resemble the landing page of a website. Your Unique Value Proposition should be clearly articulated. It should follow a clear, readable structure. Succinct. Straight to the point.

10. E-mail address from your current employer. It really is unprofessional, and more than that, leads the recruiter / Hiring Manager to believe that you apply for jobs during company time.
CV/Resume Tips of the Day:

When it comes to a CV, the lesser pages the better. 3 pages are better than 4 and 2 pages are better than 3. Unless stated otherwise, you need to remove certain unnecessary information on your CV like full address, references or other personal information like dependences or marital status. This information exposes you to potential discrimination and may endanger you or your references.

#resume #cv #cvtips #careertips #jobsearch
CV Hack:

Remove objective statements because it's about you and not what you can bring to the company. Replace them with a streamlined professional summary which shows your skills, achievements, attributes and qualifications. You can include objective statements if you are a fresh graduate with no experience or you are doing a career pivot.

Three key principles when negotiating for a salary:

1. Consider the whole package including monetary and non-monetary aspects.

2. Always ask for what you deserve based on your value.

3. Never accept the first offer that's why it's called a negotiation.
You’ve managed to make your résumé stand out, catch the eye of recruiters, and get a job interview. This is a great achievement and means you’re one step closer to getting the job you want 💪.

But, as you well know, nothing is guaranteed just yet. You now need to show that your skills make you the perfect candidate for the company and avoid making mistakes that can derail your chances.

These are mistakes you should avoid making in an interview.
