Include Achievements on your CV. Rather than just stating your job roles, do well to state some of your quantifiable achievements. Your prospective employer most likely knows your job responsibilities for your previous roles, what they would love to see are the achievements and actual impacts you made.

How to structure your CV:

Your CV requires 3 core sections which should match Job Specifications.

➡️ Education = Qualification

The 2 other optional sections which you could add on to your CV is Key Achievements, which translates your tangible results.

The other option is adding your technical specialities on your CV, this will allow you to bypass the Application Tracking Systems.

One of my best tips for finding a new job is to have an achievement-oriented resume that includes quantifiable achievements that are relevant to the job you're applying for.

We reviewed a client's resume yesterday and I was shocked to see his work experience dating back to 1990.

Let me say this again...including your entire work history is unnecessary in most cases.

So how far back should your resume go? A general rule of thumb is to provide 10-15 years of your job history as it relates to the new role you’re targeting.

This typically covers your related experience, accomplishments, and your goals for your next career move.

Unless they specifically request a lengthy work history, you can leave off how you became a first-time manager in 1988 or your college internship back in 1975.

Remember, the goal is to tailor your resume to the job you’re applying for now, and to give only the most relevant information for that specific opening.

Here are my most common Resume Tips & Rules:

*Keep the document to 10 years or 3-4 jobs listed. Reflect the years within the top summary (25+ years)

*Stay with a font of 10-12pt. (Times, Times New Roman, Ariel, Ariel Narrow, Arimo, Book Antiqua, Calibri, Carlson, Garamond, Helvetica, Cabin, Tahoma, Verdana, Trade Gothic, Georgia, Didot, Noto Sans, Cambria, Trebuchet MS, Lato)

*Do not reach out to the recruiter or hiring manager until AFTER you apply. Reflect the position, company and attach the documents you submitted within the message. Keep it short.

Ask someone to tell you 3 recent achievements they recorded, and they would reel out role responsibilities.

Your duties are not accomplishments, but the opportunity to accomplish something. You may be the head of a team, but what makes you an accomplished team head is the "Measurable" result you led the team to achieve.

So, how do we know we have truly accomplished anything worth highlighting on our Resume?

Below are some achievement identifiers:

· The amount of revenue generated
· % of sales lift
· The amount or % of money saved or slashed
· Volume of budget successfully managed
· Increased x by y%
· Growth in readership/audience size
· Tenure and duration in relation to project execution/growth
· Number of people, projects, programs, products, etc
· Reduced customer complaints by x%
· Reduced work complexity by %

Have you performed anything you can describe using any of these statements? You have accomplished something worth mentioning.

In conclusion, let your CV be achievements based rather than activity-based

1. Graphic design can be a great way to stand out in an industry where creativity is needed. For most roles, it's recommended to avoid graphics as ATS (Application Tracking System) can't read this information and most likely be rejected. You can use the same space to write relevant skills and use keywords to improve your chances.

2. Job Experience: Make sure you use an active verb and describe what you and what impact/achievements you made; otherwise, it just sounds like job spec.

2. The Right Skills:
This is a great time to run wild with those keywords from the job description. For example if they're looking for someone with experience in Business Analysis, be sure to list it in your resume's skills section.

3. Quantifiable Achievements:
Your workplace accomplishments tell the story of the unique value you bring to an organization. Stay away from dry descriptions of job duties. Use numbers to help contextualize your achievements.

E.g. I led implementation of 400 million Naira institutional capacity building project...

4. ATS-Friendly:
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is a piece of software employers use to collect, scan, organize and rank applications. The key to getting your CV past ATS and into the hands of hiring managers are smart keyword usage and good formatting.

5. Impeccable Formatting:
Fornatting a resume/CV so that it looks professional amd attractive is important. Choose a CV template that suits your profession but try and avoid colour blocks, images, borders, and caligraphic fonts as these are common deterrent to ATS.

When it comes to a CV, the lesser pages the better. 3 pages are better than 4 and 2 pages are better than 3. Unless stated otherwise, you need to remove certain unnecessary information on your CV like full address, references or other personal information like dependences or marital status. This information exposes you to potential discrimination and may endanger you or your references.
