When you think of your pay, you need to think in terms of TOTAL COMPENSATION! ⁣

When employers budget for a new employee, they take into account ALL of these types of compensation (and more). So you should take them into account too. ⁣

At one of my previous employers, we used to give memos to all employees showing their year over year total compensation. We did this to help employees break the cycle of only thinking of their salary as their compensation, when in reality there is so much more that goes into it. ⁣

Here is a list of types of compensation you may receive from an employer (and more not listed):⁣
🔹Base salary⁣
🔹Commission / Tips⁣
🔹Bonuses⁣
🔹Stock Options / ESPP⁣
🔹Insurance Premiums (health, dental, vision, disability, life, etc)⁣
🔹PTO⁣
🔹Payroll Taxes
🔹Tuition Reimbursements⁣
🔹Award/Recognition Gifts⁣
🔹Commuter Reimbursement⁣
🔹Childcare Assistance⁣

Too often people focus just on their base salary. Let’s say for example that you get a job offer for a job with a slightly lower base salary than your previous job. But they pay for all of your insurance premiums and have an annual bonus program. Would you take it? ⁣

You’d have to crunch the numbers, but most likely you’ll get more in total compensation from that job, even though the base salary was lower. ⁣

That is the reason it’s important to look at ALL forms of compensation!⁣

INTERVIEW TIP: “Why should we hire you?”

With the ‘Why should we hire you’ question, what the interviewer wants to know is how you’ll bring value to the company & the role, so you want to focus on these things. ⁣

Here’s a suggested format to follow:⁣

1️⃣ DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING⁣

Show that you understand the requirements of the job and call out a few of the qualities or skills listed that you have experience with.⁣

e.g. “I noticed the role requires X skill & Y experience.”⁣

2️⃣ WHY ARE YOU A GREAT FIT? GIVE AN EXAMPLE ⁣

Share your prior experience using a specific example (or two). Even better if you can share something that you excelled in, and any results you delivered.⁣

e.g. “In my previous role when I performed X, I was recognized for Y and received Z feedback.”⁣

3️⃣ WHY ARE YOU EXCITED?⁣

End with why you’re excited about the position and the company.⁣

e.g. “I’m really excited about the position because X and Y, and I really resonate with the company’s vision of Z.”⁣

Of course, you can also end with anything unique that can help you stand out and differentiate yourself too, like the fact that you’ll contribute your humor to team meetings, or bring your famous banana bread each month. ⁣

How would you answer this question? 👇

Today On: CAREER GAP

Ever heard of the term "Career Gap" or wondering what it means for one to make a decision to leave their job to go pursue other intetests.....that is considered taking a career gap

What is Career Gap?
Career gap is the period of time spent away from your last job to pursue other interest or change of lifestyle.

Taking time off your job is another opportunity for you to learn new skills which may boost your soft skills that you can use in the future when you decide to back to the job market.

While there are varous reasons for one to take the gap, here are the most common reasons:

🔸Furthering your studies
🔸Raising children
🔸Sabbatical
🔸Travelling
🔸Temporary illness

Many people struggle when it comes to gaining the confidence to apply for jobs when they are ready to go back to the market because of the gap.

So how do one best deal with the career gap when job searching?

𝑶𝒘𝒏 𝒊t
Be honest and upfront with it. Explain the gap so that you are always prepared

𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒊t
Include the gap in your CV/resume

𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒂𝒏t
Tailoring your CV for every role you are applying for increases your chances to succeed, the same way with your career gap. Align the skills you aquired during your gap years to roles you applying for

Dont let that gap stop you from applying!

At first glance, this looks funny but it really isn't!

Besides the fact that it's no longer really required to include references in your application unless asked, you never can really fully know what to expect of human beings o. Chai!

When last did you speak to that person you always put down as a referee?

Did you put down your university's HOD who has probably forgotten who you are?

Did you put down someone who's always too busy to check his emails or return unanswered calls?

Don't let your choice of reference be the reason you lose that job! It’s Monday, go and remove the reference information on your CV now!

DID YOU KNOW? 🤔

Employers (past, current, future) and business associates are looking at your behaviour online. This impacts decisions to hire you, use your brand or place responsibilities in your hands.

Based on research by CareerBuilder, Social Media Due Diligence has grown by 500% in a space of 10 years.

According to Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), further analysis of this research reveals that - of the 59% of hiring managers who used social media to research candidates, nearly 49% found information that impacted the candidates negatively.

Some of the information found include provocative & inappropriate content, abusive expressions, cyber bullying, discriminatory comments relating to race, gender, nationality etc.

The truth is people are watching the way you behave online for reasons that far transcend hiring.

Is Social Media Due Diligence ethical? There are schools of thought for & against this trend. But here's the deal - it continues regardless. People will always look you up.

The big question is;
What do you want them to find? If you looked back in the next five or ten years, would you be proud?
Think about this!
