When you think of your pay, you need to think in terms of TOTAL COMPENSATION! ⁣

When employers budget for a new employee, they take into account ALL of these types of compensation (and more). So you should take them into account too. ⁣

At one of my previous employers, we used to give memos to all employees showing their year over year total compensation. We did this to help employees break the cycle of only thinking of their salary as their compensation, when in reality there is so much more that goes into it. ⁣

Here is a list of types of compensation you may receive from an employer (and more not listed):⁣
🔹Base salary⁣
🔹Commission / Tips⁣
🔹Bonuses⁣
🔹Stock Options / ESPP⁣
🔹Insurance Premiums (health, dental, vision, disability, life, etc)⁣
🔹PTO⁣
🔹Payroll Taxes
🔹Tuition Reimbursements⁣
🔹Award/Recognition Gifts⁣
🔹Commuter Reimbursement⁣
🔹Childcare Assistance⁣

Too often people focus just on their base salary. Let’s say for example that you get a job offer for a job with a slightly lower base salary than your previous job. But they pay for all of your insurance premiums and have an annual bonus program. Would you take it? ⁣

You’d have to crunch the numbers, but most likely you’ll get more in total compensation from that job, even though the base salary was lower. ⁣

That is the reason it’s important to look at ALL forms of compensation!⁣

HR Word of the Day

PAYMENT IN LIEU OF NOTICE (PILON)

This is a payment made to employees by an employer for a notice period that they have been told by the employer that they do not have to work and vice versa.

If a notice period such as one month is required for an employer to terminate a contract, a 'payment in lieu of notice' is immediate compensation at an amount equal to that an employee would have earned as salary or wages by working through the whole notice period: for example, one month's salary.

A payment in lieu will include payment for holiday entitlements if the employee has them and it is taxable and pension deductible.

Nigeria's Labor Law states in Section 11 Subsection 9  :

"In the calculation of a payment in lieu of notice, only that part of the wages which a worker receives in money, exclusive of overtime and other allowances, shall be taken into account.".

When a staff resigns and doesn't want to give in lieu of notice, the staff pays his or her base/basic pay only to the Employer. However, if the organization is of the opinion that the staff should leave immediately, the organization pays the staff Net Pay

However, PILON should be guided by the contract of employment and compensation and benefits policy of the organization.
