⭐️ WSE HERO - MAY 2019

I want to celebrate people who have been World Speak English members for a long time, have contributed to its development, participated in live streams, courses, and our discussions in the community chats. All of them - WSE Heroes - have a unique story to tell.
β€”β€”β€”β€”
Augusta Tulush has been a WSE community member for a year now – since June 2018! When she had been looking for a way to practice her English, she stumbled upon out chat and YouTube channel – and eventually decided to stay. She draws a lot of inspiration from the community, and because of it decided to step out of the comfort zone and applied for Master's degree in Public Administration at Mongolia International University. She proves that nothing is an obstacle for self-improvement and growth – she is preparing to take IELTS in November! πŸ’ͺ🏻

Congratulations for becoming the WSE Hero of the month, Augusta! We love celebrating outstanding community members πŸŽ‰

πŸ““ NEW IDIOMS

1) Spread too thin - to work on many project and thus feel overwhelmed.
I realized I’d been spreading myself too thin, so I resigned as a school teacher and focused only on tutoring

2) Bite the bullet - to force yourself to work on something that is hard and requires a lot of energy.
I had been biting the bullet for a year, because the project seemed infinite

3) Come up short - to make an effort that is not enough to achieve a goal.
My colleague came up short on preparing his presentation, as he was not invited to continue his work

4) Open a can of worms - to cause even more problems, trying to solve one of them.
I don't want to engage with this supplier, I feel like we'll open a can of worms with him

5) Take something in stride - to tackle a problem in a calm and confident manner, being persistent.
When you become famous, you soon learn to take criticism in your stride

✏️ HOW TO DEVELOP WRITING SKILLS

1. Read newspapers in English
There is a choice what media to read - classical literature or modern media. When choosing the last one, you will β€œabsorb” popular words and sentences that native speakers use regularly. Choose the edition of the subject that is closest to you. You can start small - devote every morning at least 15 minutes to reading news feeds.

2. Create a blog or diary
Another good habit is to set aside daily diary time. You can, of course, make notes on paper, but it is much more interesting to create a blog on the Internet, to correspond with like-minded people, leave comments and discuss relevant topics in English. However, a paper-based diary is amazing to keep through years and develop your hand-writing.

3. Find a pen friend
Today, in a few clicks, you can find a penpal abroad. The easiest way to do this is on Instagram. It is enough to enter into the search the hashtags #penpalswanted and #smailmail, as you will see hundreds of pages of fans of "live" letters. It is customary to put small souvenirs in envelopes - as a rule, these are stickers, decorative scotch tapes, stamps, brochures about your city in English or calendars.

4. Try special sites
Take advantage of useful interactive exercises that you can perform on the Internet, often watch useful videos. The ESOL courses: Free English lessons online site contains tasks by levels - you need to insert words that match the meaning in the text, and here you can find useful videos in the Writing section that will help you to significantly improve your writing skills for IELTS.

πŸ” DISCUSSION TIME

Now women and men both have full-time jobs. So logically they should do housework equally. Do you agree or disagree and why?

You're welcome to discuss it in our group @wsecommunity
πŸ” DISCUSSION ESSAY

Nowadays an ever-increasing number of women work full time, and in this reality it is widely believed that house chores should be shared between men and women equally. I strongly agree with this statement.

One of the reasons for sharing housework between male and female partners is to promote gender equality. A stereotype that has existed a long time is that females ought to stay home, taking care of the family once they got married. This includes looking after the children and doing all of the housework, which is fairly labour-intensive. However, this approach could have quite a few disadvantages. It would render women less able of keeping abreast of what is happening in the job market, literately forming a lifestyle where they might find it arduous to step into the society again. To avoid this, many women are willing to get back into the workforce soon after their maternity leave, and once they do, it makes sense that their husbands should share part of the household chores, to fulfill their family responsibilities.

Nevertheless, we cannot be oblivious to several drawbacks of this trend. One potential downside is that men are less experienced in dealing with household tasks. This is because many seldom take an active role in doing housework, according to customs of many countries. As a result, they may end up doing household tasks in a less than perfect way, which could contribute to some unnecessary quarrels between partners, hindering their family bond. However, the likelihood of this happening isn’t very high, because wives can offer some tips or guidance to their husbands when they learn how to share house chores such as mopping floors or doing laundry.

To sum up, although some conflicts might be triggered when equally sharing the duties of household tasks, the benefits of this trend are relatively oblivious.

(Band score 8.5-9.0)

😱 THE MOST FREQUENT MISTAKE

There is one mistake that I hear literally every day from my students. Prepare for it.

❌Give IELTS (or any other exam).❌

This is wrong. Please, remember that students take exams, and only teachers give them.

Correct way of saying:
I am taking IELTS in 2 days, wish me luck!
I took GMAT 3 months ago and I feel now ready to repeat.
I want to prepare first, before taking TOEFL.
