πŸ‘» COMMON IELTS WRITING MISTAKES

Still don't know how to handle your punctuation in writing? You should because it is graded in your essays! Here are the most common 6 punctuation mistakes on IELTS Writing:

1. Informal contractions like don't. shouldn't, won't, isn't.
Remember, you must use only formal style in your IELTS essays (even when writing a letter to a friend). Therefore, use only full negation forms: do not, should not, will not, is not.

2. Omitted points (full stops) in the end of sentences.
It's easy, isn't it? Just always end your sentence with a full stop and start the next one with a capital letter.

3. Too many commas in extremely long sentences.
If you notice that your sentence stretches across 4-5 lines of your essay - something definitely is going wrong. It is much better to write shorter, concise sentences without punctuation excess.

4. Wrong apostrophe usage.
Remember how possessive case is used - we put an apostrophe before "s" in singular (a singer's mike) and after "s" in plural nouns (singers' mikes).

5. Exclamation point!
Do you really need it in your IELTS essay? Think twice. Are you being formal when putting these exclamation points in the end of your sentences and adding this emotional tone. I doubt it. Leave it for your text messages.

6. Suspension points (three dots β€” ...).
Same as wit the exclamation points. These elision marks are used in novels and fiction books to express sadness or confusion. You definitely don't need this in your IELTS write-ups! Make sure to stay formal and take the style example from scientific reports.

✏️ 9 STEPS TO DESCRIBE A DIAGRAM FOR IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1

1. Read the title and the image of the diagram, and paraphrase it – this will be your Introduction.

2. Find similarities and differences, assign data to groups, describing the diagram in detail – this will be your main body of text.

3. Add sequencing words to your text in order to connect your descriptive sentences and make it flow better. (For example: next, once, additionally)

4. Make sure to include Passive Form in the description to define an action that is done.

5. Make sure you paraphrase all the time through your essay to avoid redundancy and repetition.

6. Include conditionals and adverb clauses to indicate possible outcomes when describing the diagram.

7. Use more linking words to make your essay cohesive and coherent (For example: therefore, however, although, nevertheless).

8. Write a clear summary of the principle idea of the diagram in one short paragraph - your conclusion.

9. Read through your written work to check for any errors.

β€‹β€‹πŸ“Š IELTS WRITING TASK 1 (MAKKAR)

Note, I do not think that this is an authentic source of model essays. Writings that you see in this book will most likely not score 7+ on IELTS. I generally do not trust Makkar, as they are not the official IELTS publishing house.

However, if you aim at 4.0-6.5 for your Writing, you might find some structures and vocabulary to refer to from these essays.

β€‹β€‹πŸ”‘ KEY TO IELTS WRITING SUCCESS

Can you guess what might be the cornerstone of a high Writing band score? Or what might ruin a well-written essay? πŸ€”

The simple answer is Task Achievement. Let’s dig deeper.

TA is one of four criteria that IELTS writing tasks are judged by. The whole point of this criterion is to check how clearly test takers understood the task and fulfilled the given requirements. And this might be trickier than it sounds.

β–ͺ️In Task 1 General Training you will need to write a letter and the task will specify both the reason and recipient. So, keep in mind 2 things here - you're expected to cover all bullet points of the task and watch your tone.

β–ͺ️Make sure you haven't ignored who your reader is supposed to be and adapted your language to fit the given scenario. Imagine the face of your friend who receives a letter written in strict harsh formal tone. I bet the examiner’s reaction will be the same ;)

πŸ”ΉIn Task 1 for Academic you are provided with a graph/table or diagram. Be careful when analyzing. You are expected to identify main trends, peaks and lows without a fail and outline them in an overview.

πŸ”ΉDon’t report every detail. If you recount detail mechanically with no clear overview the band score won’t improve to more than band 5. Therefore, make sure to illustrate key features and approach the task analytically. This is why remember to make comparisons wherever you can. The best way is to group data based on similarities and compare differences.

πŸ”ΈWriting Task 2 is pretty similar for both modules, and you will have achieved the task once all the parts of the question are fully covered. This is why it’s worth underlining key words in the question before starting to answer. If you miss the word Β«outweighΒ» and just describe advantages and disadvantages, your band score will be just 5.

πŸ”ΈDevelop & support your ideas. with explanations, examples or experience. If you present a clear position but conclusions are vague or repetitive, don’t expect more than a band 6.

πŸ”ΈEnsure your opinion is clear in your answer if you are asked for it. Sometimes, in "opinion essays" candidates just discuss the question statement and never articulate what their own opinion is, which drops TA score to 4.

Remember, even if your grammar and vocabulary are brilliant, not knowing how the Task Achievement works might ruin your essay completely. This is arguably the most important criterion in Writing.

IELTS ADVANTAGE WRITING SKILLS

The book shows students how to organise and structure an answer for all types of task 1 and task 2 different questions.

It also contains a model essay in each unit, showing students exactly what is required; contains a general interest article in each unit, developing ideas and vocabulary for a common topic in the exam;

In addition, the book contains grammar exercises in each unit, showing students how to apply a wide range of grammar items in their IELTS writing.

Beware of model essays there though. Usually such books don't have better examples than band 6 essays even if they state otherwise.
