βœ”οΈHOW WORDS ARE COUNTED IN IELTS

Example: NOT MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER

1. Numbers, dates and time are counted as words in writing. For example
30,000 = one word
55 = one word
9.30am = one word
12.06.2016 = one word.
In listening, 30,000 is counted as one number and 9.30AM is also counted as one number.

2. Dates written as both words and numbers are counted in this way: 12th July = one number and one word.

3. Symbols with numbers are not counted. For example, 55% = one number (the symbol β€œ%” is not counted as a word). However, if you write β€œ55 percent” it is counted as one word and one number.

4. Small words such as β€œa” or β€œan” are counted as one word. All prepositions, such as β€œin” or β€œat” are also counted. All words are counted.

5. Hyphenated words like β€œup-to-date” are counted as one word.

6. Compound nouns which are written as one word are also counted as one word. For example, blackboard = one word.

7. Compound nouns which are written as two separate words, are counted as two words. For example, university bookshop = two words.

8. All words are counted, including words in brackets. For example in IELTS writing, β€œThe majority of energy was generated by electricity (55%).”. This sentence is counted as 9 words. The number in brackets is counted.

πŸ’₯ TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN TRAINING

Read the text
(abstract from The Economist, 2021 Jan 9th edition)

For there to be any vaccines, let alone a plethora of them, less than a year after the first cases of covid-19 were reported is an unprecedented achievement. It also brings new challenges. In rich countries, where most of the vaccine development went on and was paid for, these are primarily in manufacture and distribution: how to manage the logistical task of getting vaccines into the right people as fast as possible. Middle-income and poor countries face problems of acquisition. And everywhere disparities within and between countries are highlighting pre-existing inequalities and political dysfunction.

And prepare to answer questions in the quiz below.

Just as any other type of education, IELTS courses can be taught either in groups or individually.

πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸ« Individual learning:

- During a one-on-one class, students have much more personal teacher's attention and opportunity to ask as many questions as possible.
- Student will be in closer contact with their teacher, which makes some people feel comfortable and eases up the learning process.
- You and your teacher can work out the approach to studies that fits you best. Typically you focus on your personal weaknesses and use materials that work for you better.

Check cards for group learning benefits πŸ‘‰πŸ»

The combination of the two methods of learning is a guarantee to the maximum result, this is why the Rocket IELTS Course incorporates both of these methods - we have one-on-one Speaking sessions with an English native and weekly group discussions.

β€‹β€‹πŸ”‘ KEY TO IELTS WRITING SUCCESS

Can you guess what might be the cornerstone of a high Writing band score? Or what might ruin a well-written essay? πŸ€”

The simple answer is Task Achievement. Let’s dig deeper.

TA is one of four criteria that IELTS writing tasks are judged by. The whole point of this criterion is to check how clearly test takers understood the task and fulfilled the given requirements. And this might be trickier than it sounds.

β–ͺ️In Task 1 General Training you will need to write a letter and the task will specify both the reason and recipient. So, keep in mind 2 things here - you're expected to cover all bullet points of the task and watch your tone.

β–ͺ️Make sure you haven't ignored who your reader is supposed to be and adapted your language to fit the given scenario. Imagine the face of your friend who receives a letter written in strict harsh formal tone. I bet the examiner’s reaction will be the same ;)

πŸ”ΉIn Task 1 for Academic you are provided with a graph/table or diagram. Be careful when analyzing. You are expected to identify main trends, peaks and lows without a fail and outline them in an overview.

πŸ”ΉDon’t report every detail. If you recount detail mechanically with no clear overview the band score won’t improve to more than band 5. Therefore, make sure to illustrate key features and approach the task analytically. This is why remember to make comparisons wherever you can. The best way is to group data based on similarities and compare differences.

πŸ”ΈWriting Task 2 is pretty similar for both modules, and you will have achieved the task once all the parts of the question are fully covered. This is why it’s worth underlining key words in the question before starting to answer. If you miss the word Β«outweighΒ» and just describe advantages and disadvantages, your band score will be just 5.

πŸ”ΈDevelop & support your ideas. with explanations, examples or experience. If you present a clear position but conclusions are vague or repetitive, don’t expect more than a band 6.

πŸ”ΈEnsure your opinion is clear in your answer if you are asked for it. Sometimes, in "opinion essays" candidates just discuss the question statement and never articulate what their own opinion is, which drops TA score to 4.

Remember, even if your grammar and vocabulary are brilliant, not knowing how the Task Achievement works might ruin your essay completely. This is arguably the most important criterion in Writing.

IELTS Vocabulary: 'topic specific' and 'less common'

Is there a difference between 'topic specific' vocabulary and 'less common' vocabulary? Let's have a closer look at these terms.

Topic specific just means 'about the topic'. For example, if the question is about climate change, the word 'pollution' is topic specific.

Less common vocabulary. Staying with the climate change topic, I think you'll agree that 'pollution' is a relatively common or easy word that most IELTS candidates would know. So, which words or phrases might be considered 'less common'? Here are some suggestions:
- burning fossil fuels
- greenhouse gas emissions
- carbon footprint
- become carbon neutral
- renewable energy sources
- reach a tipping point
- rising sea levels
- the melting of ice caps
- extreme weather phenonemon/phenomena
- decarbonize
- biofuel production
- energy conservation
- emissions reduction

These 'less common' phrases go deeper into the climate change topic (compared to the word 'pollution') and demonstrate that you know a wider range of relevant vocabulary.

Notice that the 'less common' list above contains collocations (groups of words) rather than individual 'big' words. If you're aiming for a band 7 or higher, this is the type of vocabulary that you need: topic-specific collocations and phrases.

✨ LIVE IELTS SPEAKING PRACTICE

Today I've run a live lesson for 25 students from an Indian school called IELTS Cafe. We had a blast!

Not only did we practice real-difficulty IELTS questions, but also laughed a lot. Because IELTS is fun! πŸ™ŒπŸ»

πŸ“Some things I have pointed out from the practice:

1) don't use overly complicated words! Using "plethora" in a casual answer about movies will make you sound out of context.

2) don't use "very" with strong adjectives like "overwhelmed" or "jubilant". Use "absolutely" instead. "Very" is for weaker adjectives.
For example: "I was absolutely jubilant to see you, you make me very happy!"
