Breitbart, 23.7.2018: “‘If governments do their job, the dirty business of illegal immigration can be stopped,’ Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini announced Sunday. In an enthusiastic tweet, Salvini, the 45-year-old leader of the League party, said that the Italian Coast Guard had successfully saved the lives of 40 African migrants over the weekend by rescuing them at sea and taking them back to Libya. ‘Willing is being able, I am all in,’ Salvini concluded. Salvini also posted a video on his Facebook page Monday in which he expresses his hope that recent attempts to shuttle migrants across the Strait of Sicily represent the ‘last gasps’ of human traffickers and that this will be ‘the last summer of tragedies in the Mediterranean.’
Curiously, Mr. Salvini’s parting wish coincides exactly with a special appeal made by Pope Francis on Sunday, in which he, too, expressed his wish that the tragic migrant deaths in the Mediterranean would soon come to an end [...] Although Salvini and the pope do not see eye to eye on the immigration question, with Salvini pushing for an end to illegal immigration and Francis pressing for a more “welcoming” attitude toward economic migrants, they seem to have connected in a will to bring an end to migrant deaths. The question remains how best this can be accomplished, but for the moment it would seem that Salvini has the upper hand.
As Breitbart News has reported, recent immigration data released by both the UNHCR and IOM show a remarkable correlation between curbing immigration and curbing migrant deaths [...] In this light, Salvini’s tightened immigration policies would seem to be a much more effective remedy to migrant sea deaths than fanciful calls for open borders and open ports.”

Dem 39 Jahre alten Potsdamer drohen bis zu 20 Jahre Haft wegen Beihilfe zur illegalen Einwanderung. Der gelernte Rettungsassistent war bis Mitte 2017 Einsatzleiter bei einer Seenotrettungsmission, die im Mittelmeer tausende Flüchtlinge rettete. Dafür müssen sich er und andere Helfer vermutlich im kommenden Jahr vor einem italienischen Gericht nun verantworten [...] Unter anderem war er 2016 und 2017 auf dem Rettungsschiff ‘Iuventa’ der Berliner Hilfsorganisation ‘Jugend Rettet’ im Einsatz, die nach seinen Worten mehr als 14.000 Menschen aus Seenot rettete – bis die italienische Polizei das Schiff, ein mittels Spenden umgebauter Fischkutter, im August 2017 auf Lampedusa durchsuchte und beschlagnahmt [...] Als das Schiff beschlagnahmt wurde, hätten die Ermittler sogar noch von illegalem Waffenbesitz und angeblicher Zusammenarbeit mit organisierten Schleuserbanden gesprochen [...] Doch dann kam der August 2017, als die Behörden das Schiff ‘vorsorglich’ aus dem Verkehr zogen, wie es damals hieß. Konkret wirft die italienische Justiz den Rettern vor, Boote zurück an Schlepper zu übergeben, anstatt sie zu zerstören. Unter anderem soll das ein Foto belegen, das ein verdeckter Ermittler an Bord eines anderen Rettungsschiffs aufgenommen hatte |...] Bekannt sei allerdings schon, dass das Schiff vor der Beschlagnahmung mindestens drei Monate lang verwanzt war, ferner Telefone der Helfer abgehört wurden. ‘Das macht einem alles Angst.’ Sollte die Anklage wegen Beihilfe zur illegalen Einwanderung in eine Verurteilung münden, drohen Girke bis zu 20 Jahre Haft und eine Geldbuße von 15.000 Euro pro nach Italien gebrachter Person.”
