Moina Mathers (nee Mina Bergson) was born in Geneva (Switzerland) in a large family. Her father was a pianist, and they often moved from place to place so that he could teach (alas, at that time anti-Semitic sentiments took place). It was in the British Museum that she met and became friends with Annie Horniman, who later became a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn and provided significant support to the Mathers family. There she met Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, one of the founders of the Order of the Golden Dawn, her future spouse.
Despite the disagreement of Mina Bergson's parents, she entered into marriage with MacGregor Mathers, and, at his request, took the name “Moina” that sounds Scottish. They agreed that all their married life their love relationship would be purely platonic.
In the Order of the Golden Dawn, Moina Mathers took for herself the motto Vestiga Nulla Restorum (“I never go back the same way”) acted as a medium proclaiming the will of the “Secret Chiefs of the Order”. She was fluent in French, German and English, had pedagogical talent. She personally painted the Ritual Halls of the London and Paris Temple, and, subsequently, the Temples of the Order of Alpha and Omega, she also produced the regalia of the Order of the Golden Dawn. On July 25, 1928, 94 years ago, Moina Mathers (Mina Bergson) died - an active member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the head of the Order after the death of Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers.
Moina Mathers (nee Mina Bergson) was born in Geneva (Switzerland) in a large family. Her father was a pianist, and they often moved from place to place so that he could teach (alas, at that time anti-Semitic sentiments took place). The family lived in poverty, but the children received a decent education. Mina Bergson's brother, Henri Bergson, stayed in Paris to receive additional humanitarian education. (Later he became a famous philosopher.) The family eventually moved to the outskirts of London, but they found the means to pay for Mina’s studies at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she was able to develop her natural talent for visual arts. In the British Museum, she studied the objects of art of ancient Egypt and Celtic culture.
It was in the British Museum that she met and became friends with Annie Horniman, who later became a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn and provided significant support to the Mathers family. There she met Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, one of the founders of the Order of the Golden Dawn, her future spouse.
Despite the disagreement of Mina Bergson's parents, she entered into marriage with MacGregor Mathers, and, at his request, took the name “Moina” that sounds Scottish. They agreed that all their married life their love relationship would be purely platonic.
In the Order of the Golden Dawn, Moina Mathers took for herself the motto Vestiga Nulla Restorum (“I never go back the same way”) acted as a medium proclaiming the will of the “Secret Chiefs of the Order”. She was fluent in French, German and English, had pedagogical talent. She personally painted the Ritual Halls of the London and Paris Temple, and, subsequently, the Temples of the Order of Alpha and Omega, she also produced the regalia of the Order of the Golden Dawn. She performed at the Paris Theater in 1899 in the Rites of Isis, composed by MacGregor Mathers.
In 1927, Moina Mathers refused to eat, which was eventually the cause of her death. She died on July 25, 1928 in the hospital of the Abbey of St. Mary.
