I want to celebrate people who have been World Speaks English members for a long time, have contributed to its development, participated in live streams, courses, and our discussions in the community chats. All of them - WSE Heroes - have a unique story to tell.

This is Ahmad from Syria. One year ago, he started preparing for the Academic IELTS. His goals were to get an IELTS score before graduation so that would give him a great advantage in the future. He also saw benefits in improving his English level in general.

Once he was browsing the Internet and stumbled upon our YouTube channel where he found video lessons that proved useful for prep. He reached out to contact me for clarification in some modules and was pleased with the fact it's so easy to communicate with an online trainer. Regarding the WSE community he made sure to benefit from members' experiences and established some frienships along the way 🤝

He has recently achieved 6.5 overall just in time before his graduation, so now he enjoys a significant advantage over his peers when it comes to applying for Master's degree! 🎓

💬 IELTS SPEAKING TEST SAMPLE

Get a friend and practice these questions!

Task 1
– Have you had breakfast today, do you think it is important?
– What do you usually eat for breakfast?
– Has your routine changed since you were younger?
– What would you like to change in your present routine?
– What are your hobbies?
– Do you think your circle of friends affect your hobbies?

Task 2
Talk about a time when someone gave you money as a gift. Please say:

👻 BODY LANGUAGE ON IELTS

I noticed that many students doubt whether body language, eye contact, confidence and face expression matter on IELTS Speaking. Let's discuss this together.

My arguments are the following:
1) You're assessed based on your fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and structure of ideas. So, your body language is technically not taken into account when grading your performance.
2) Your speed is recorded, so when there is any confusion in your answer examiners will re-listen to it and won't see your body language, so again - it won't count in.
3) However, we naturally sound more fluent, persuading, our speech is more coherent and pleasant to listen to when we use appropriate body language - calm, positive, confident, welcoming.

So, the conclusion for me is that it is definitely beneficial to improve gestures, facial expressions and my tone of speaking - because they will inevitably influence the whole speech. I'd like to sound confident and relaxed, not tensed, anxious and shy.

​​🚀 NEW ROCKET COURSE STREAM LAUNCH

We're starting off a new stream (13th!) of the Rocket Speed IELTS Prep course. The course was entirely developed by me to encompass working strategies and approaches to IELTS that I used to get 8.0 overall with self-preparation. Therefore, the materials I share on the course are exclusive and not available on any other of my platforms. The learning is quite intensive, so there is no time to relax.

I keep course groups relatively small - under 20 people - to cater to all of the students, provide high-quality guidance and reply fully to any comment/question/doubt. We work on all 4 IELTS modules + 3 blocks of advanced vocabulary for the test. The course is very flexible, so that anyone who studies / works full-time can participate. I am super excited to work with the group members in the following month!

​​🚃 PHRASAL VERBS ABOUT TRAVELLING

Contrary to the popular belief that phrasal verbs should not be used on IELTS, I am sharing here a nice verb list to enrich your vocabulary with when talking about journeys and travelling.
Remember, it is perfectly okay to use phrasal verbs in your writing or speaking on IELTS - they make your language richer and help sound like a native.

👯‍♀️ TYPES OF SPEECH IN WRITING

When more than 2 people are involved in a conversation, DIRECT and UNDIRECT speech is used.

💬 Direct speech repeats, or quotes, the exact words spoken. When we use direct speech in writing, we place the words spoken between quotation marks (" ") and there is no change in these words. We may be reporting something that's being said NOW (for example a telephone conversation), or telling someone later about a previous conversation.

 She says, "What time will you be home?"
"There's a fly in my soup!" screamed Simone.

💬 Reported or indirect speech is usually used to talk about the past, so we normally change the tense of the words spoken. We use reporting verbs like 'say', 'tell', 'ask', and we may use the word 'that' to introduce the reported words. Inverted commas are not used.

 She said, "I saw him." (direct speech) = She said that she had seen him. (indirect speech)

'That' may be omitted:

 She told him that she was happy. = She told him she was happy.

​​⭐️ WSE HERO - JANUARY 2020

This is Rito from India. He has always had the dream of working and settling abroad. IELTS was the first step towards this goal, however it was not easy to prepare. Let's start off from the fact that he has recently got a child in December (congratulations!). He also works as an Audiologist and Speech Therapist in his own clinic, which is a lot of responsibility.
So, having been simultaneously looking after the baby, the clinic job and working his way through IELTS preparation, Rito took the test in January 2020. He claims he hadn't slept for more than 3 hours since November! 😱

Rito stumbled upon my YouTube channel and found lots of helpful resources that made him more confident and well-prepared. When the results arrived, Reto was delighted to know that he achieved overall 7.5 band score! 🎉 He appreciates the WSE community as a helping hand for non-native speakers like him to realize their potential and achieve dreams abroad.
