Robert K. Merton was a sociologist who contributed significantly to the field of sociology by developing several key concepts and theories. One of his most well-known ideas is the concept of "manifest and latent functions," which suggests that any social institution or behavior can have both intended (manifest) and unintended (latent) consequences.

For example, let's take the institution of education. The manifest function of education is to provide students with knowledge and skills to prepare them for the workforce. However, education can also have latent functions, such as socialization, where students learn about the values and norms of society, and sorting, where education is used to stratify individuals based on their abilities.

Another important concept developed by Merton is "strain theory," which explains how social structures can create strain or stress on individuals, leading to deviant behavior. For example, if someone is unable to achieve their goals through legitimate means (such as getting a job), they may turn to deviant means (such as stealing) to achieve those goals.

Overall, R.K. Merton's ideas have had a significant impact on the field of sociology and provide a useful framework for understanding the complex ways in which social structures and institutions can influence individual behavior.

knowledge is not for knowing; knowledge is for cutting." - michel foucault

michel foucault, the french philosopher and social theorist, believed that knowledge is not simply a neutral or objective pursuit of truth, but rather a means of power and control. he argued that knowledge is often used to reinforce existing power structures and exclude certain groups from participating in society.

for foucault, the goal of knowledge is not just to accumulate information, but to use it to transform and shape the world around us. this quote, "knowledge is not for knowing; knowledge is for cutting," reflects his belief that knowledge is a tool that can be used to challenge existing power structures and create new ones.

examples of this can be seen in movements for social justice and equality, where knowledge is used to challenge dominant narratives and create new ways of understanding the world. by questioning established norms and challenging the status quo, knowledge can be a powerful force for change.

Think about the person next to you, working as a delivery boy or manual scavenger—what if they had a real education that helped them grow? Many people think they’ve failed in life just because they didn’t memorize enough for exams. But true education isn’t about cramming facts, it’s about helping people find their strengths, think for themselves, and understand their potential.

Maybe these people never got the chance to learn in a way that suited them. Our system often makes people feel like failures if they don’t fit in, but real education could help them discover their true talents. If more people had access to this kind of learning, we’d see fewer "failures" and more hidden talent coming to life in surprising places.

WHAT WE SEE IS NOT REAL, THERE ARE HIDDEN FACTS IN THAT, ...SOCIAL SCIENCES DISCIPLINES HELP TO UNDERSTAND THESE HIDDEN FACTS.
