Virupaksha Temple at dusk with the moon in the backdrop and smaller shrines in the foreground. The temple is part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is reckoned to have existed in some form or the other since the 7th century and grew into a large shrine under the Vijayanagar rulers. The eastern gateway is almost 50 metres in height and is surrounded by a cluster of smaller shrines.
