The Pune-headquartered Southern Command of the Indian Army has mobilised its two rescue columns along with two Indian Air Forceβs (IAF) helicopters from the Sulur Air Force Station in Coimbatore to be deployed in Keralaβs Wayanad district that was rattled by a massive landslide early on Tuesday.
The Armyβs action comes based on Kerala governmentβs request for military help in landslide-hit areas of Meppadi, Mundakkai Town and Chooralmala that left at least 50 people killed and hundreds trapped.
Adverse weather conditions are dampening the rescue efforts as several houses, shops and vehicles are buried under the debris in Mundakkai. A bridge to the spot has been washed away, further complicating rescue efforts.
