Hello all!
Remember, a while back, I mentioend how HackerHouse Paris was launching a subscription living.
Well, this trend is definitely about to continue.
Two other brands are going into this direction:
On a smaller scale, we have Zoku, offering higher-end living for working professionals:
And on the more flexible pricing end, we got Selina.
Selina, a hostel/hotel/experience company founded 7 years back, has a crazy story!
After running one hostel successfully, mixing it with local culture and great experiences, the company scaled to 35+ locations and 7,000 employees in 7 years only.
Then, the covid-crash hit and they had to close down some locations, let go of staff, and reinvent themselves.
The good news: many locations are still open.
And the even better news: they, too, go into subscribtion living.
With that, starting $324/month, residents can now travel across geographic regions (for example Mexico) and have dozens of Selina's to live from.
It's even more interesting than Zoku because having that many locations truly gives people the flexibility of being where they want to be.
Now, will this model work? There are some limitations:
1. The monthly fee is limited by region. For example, the monthly rate for Europe must be higher than Mexico, since rental prices are more expensive. It would be very hard for one company to launch a "global" subscription, since rental prices very a lot based on the area.
2. If people choose this subscription, they have to be in love with the brand. That means, you need to create die-hard fans. Will these be created in times of covid? Only the future will tell!
That is it for now. Any thoughts? 🧐
