Hello all ๐Ÿ™Œ

It's been a while and I have TONS of big updates!

First things first - join me this Thursday for one of the most awaited Co-Liv events on "Community Frameworks" ๐Ÿ™Œ

I'll have the honor to share the stage with Isabelle Mas, the regional French coordinator for Burning Man (!) and share techniques, practices and frameworks on how to build community!

Among others, I will share...

> how to build communities in coliving spaces and beyond

> how to balance community building vs. investment goals

> which frameworks work best and which mistakes to avoid as a coliving operator

Hosted by our amazing Co-Liv ambassadors Kelsea Crawford and Fabrice Simondi, bring your questions, desire to learn and own expertise to share with the attendees!

This is a must-read for coliving operators:

Phil and Gillian from SUPERNUCLEAR wrote a great piece on how to select residents - tackling the question on how to be specific in building up your community without being exclusive ๐Ÿง

Their solution: the concept of opt-in exclusivity.

Here are the core four pillars of how they advise coliving spaces to choose their residents - and especially, having the resident choose the space!

1. Work: Indicate that this will require effort and describe how much effort.

2. Experimental structures: Describe the unique way that you do things.

3. Application process: Make people put in effort to apply.

4. Values: Stating an explicit set of values (especially slightly polarizing values) will force people to ask whether those values align with their own.

Read more on their latest newsletter at https://supernuclear.substack.com/p/opt-in-exclusivity

I highly align with their approach. How are YOU dealing with application processes?
๐Ÿ“ฐ I just read the following news:

(The city of) Alexandria, Virginia, is considering regulating what it calls โ€œco-housing" - but a spokesperson for Cohousing.org told Alexandria Living that what the city is considering regulating is actually co-living โ€” not co-housing.

There we go again - the good old debate! ๐Ÿ˜

I'm actually glad ot be reading these news because the article continues as follow...

The difference is co-living involves the communal use of shared bathrooms and common spaces, such as kitchens and living rooms. Co-housing, on the other hand, involves individual units with their own kitchens and bathrooms.

The news came from this post. See how there still is a TON of confusion around what coliving means! And by the way, it's coliving, not co-living (and you can read here why) ๐Ÿ˜‰

For me, there are four main factors for coliving
"to be coliving":

1. Residents share common areas, usually kitchen and/or living room (note that it's not the showers that make coliving a coliving space, even though they can be shared)

2. Residents sleep under one roof: this takes away all the cohousing schemes, in which people have different houses but share a common main area

3. Residents (and/or operator) have the intention to have a communal experience (this would take away hospitals or prisons, were people are not in there primarily for the communal experience but because they're forced or obliged to)

4. And finally: residents can't be from the same blood - it has to be biologically unrelated people.

That's mainly it. Some people add the notion of "space-as-a-service", but that takes away self-organized coliving spaces (or coliving spaces in which residents are heavily involved, whereby the notion of a service is becoming blurry).

To read more about the definition of coliving, I recommend Part 1 and Part 2 of a blogpost series that I wrote back in 2019.

What is your definition of coliving? Comment below !๐Ÿ‘‡
If there is one post you need to read about community building in coliving this week...

...then it is the one from Kelsea Crawford and Bryce Willem, who did a recap of last week's Co-Liv event in France, where myself alongside Ricardo Neves (Oka Coliving) and Isabelle Mas (Burning Man) shared best practices on community building frameworks and approaches.

No doubt that this post (and content) will make history ๐Ÿ”ฅ

And - it shows how our events at Co-Liv are just increasingly becoming THE reference point in the coliving industry (and beyond).

With further due...

Hey champs ๐Ÿ™Œ

As you can see, I've been a bit MIA (missing in action) mainly beacuse... I've been putting all my focus on the upcoming Co-Liv Summit, which is happening in 2 weeks from now!

Today, I had to share this post from Carlos, where he explains how coliving operators can improve the EXPERIENCE JOURNEY of coliving residents.

It's super actionable and the best I've read on this front.

Enjoy the read!

PS: and sign up for the Co-Liv Summit here if you want to join! ๐ŸŽ‰
And then... we decided to launch a coliving shop ๐Ÿ˜…

Starting as a joke, it went into reality. And now, here is what's going to happen...

- at first, we are going to have only a few die-hard fans buy some swag for the upcoming #colivsummit (because yes, it does look dope)

- then, we're going to launch more cool stuff that actually represents the coliving movement, including key quotes and statements

- and in 3 years from now, we sell the Co-Shop to Amazon

(okay, the last one is a joke!)

Go and check out this fun (and IMO sexy) initiative... and especially, tell me what ideas you have for quotes and prodcuts - we are going to crowdsource the next product ideas !!

In one hashtag: welcome to the #colivingswag ๐Ÿ“ฃ
Hi friends! A little update on something BIG thatโ€™s happening next week ๐Ÿฅณ

๐Ÿ‘‰ On May 5/6th, we're organizing the global Co-Liv Summit, which will bring together the coliving ecosystem for two days filled with networking sessions and high-quality content.

With 80+ speakers, 30+ talks/panels and a diversity of topics (investment, business models, space design, public policy, innovation opportunities, etc) the Co-Liv Summit has turned into the largest coliving event to date!

For me personally, after traveling the coliving world for 2 years and meeting tons of its actors, this is the big finale in which the most inspiring doers and shakers will come to share, learn and connect. And Iโ€™d love you to be part of it!

In case you donโ€™t have your tickets, you can get them now at

๐Ÿ‘‰ https://colivsummit.co/the-summit

Enjoy, big hugs and hope to see you there ๐Ÿ™
Hello champs ๐Ÿ™Œ

One day to go until the #colivsummit starts!

And now, the LIVE STUDIO is getting ready! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It's incredible what happened in the last weeks โœจ

More than 500 attendees will be at the Summit ๐Ÿ™Œ

150 coliving professionals joined Co-Liv as members since March ๐Ÿ‘Š

15 new partners joined the adventure ๐Ÿค

More than 500 LinkedIn posts mentioned Co-Liv ๐ŸŽ‰

And 1000+ new followers on our social media ๐Ÿ˜

The Co-Liv Summit has set the coliving industry to a new height.

It's bringing the movement together under one roof,
at one event, for two whole days.

In short, the Summit is THE place where you will...

๐Ÿ‘‰ meet your fellow coliving professionals, peers and future business partners

๐Ÿ‘‰ learn from the BEST in their field

๐Ÿ‘‰ know the results of the fantastic Coliving Awards

and ๐Ÿ‘‰ be at the forefront of the #coliving movement

I can't wait to see you there!
Note also that, after the Summit, I'll be sharing how we build up that much momentum, how we were able to catalyze on it financially and how you can make the most out of that entire movement!

In the meanwhile, if you want to join, you can get your tickets at colivsummit.co ๐ŸŽŸ

Cheers from Paris!
Hey all! Has been a while and now I'm back on the juicy coliving stuff after an amazing Summit!

I was introduced to this concept called Embassies.

Highly recommend to check out. Why?

Because it showcases that there is a big need in the market for coliving for elderly.

Quality living for people 55+ who are not ready for elderly homes but want a communal life.

Any other examples you guys have or anyone working on this?

Cheers!
A little twitter thread by Houck who also wrote the newsletter CollabDaily, on why most communities fail.

Highly recommend this short read. Resonates a lot with everything I've seen. PS: Thanks to the amazing Mayank for finding this!

Hey all! Happy Monday ๐Ÿ˜

Over the last weeks, a few things happened - but the main one is, that the Art of Coliving book is almost done, and now entering the final revision phase.

This means that, hopefolly, by mid- or end- of September, the book will be out! ๐ŸŽ‰

This has been the main reason for me not being active in this channel, or creating content, as all my focus has been on shipping this big masterpiece, after which I'll be able to refocus back on lots of smaller, juicy things ๐Ÿ™ƒ

As another update, I'd love to invite you to Co-Liv's first tech community workshop!

For those who don't know, we recently launched a dedicated mastermind community specially for coliving entrepreneurs and tech services providers, and anyone intersted in the relationship between technology and coliving.

On Wednesday, the first workshop will be around video surveillance, and how it can help with coliving operations, processes, and outcomes.

It'll be very interactive and hands-on. Sign up to register here if you're intersted to join!

Wishing you an amazing week ahead,

Hey all! I HAD to share this upcoming event with you all.
What happened?

Inspired by the 2017 Co-Liv Conference in San Francisco, this amazing person called Scott Cooney renovated a multi-level house in Hawaii to be a small version of an intentional community.

His community now includes multiple shared spaces, both indoor and out, a permaculture garden with rain barrels, and a net-zero energy home.

On Thursday, Scott will discuss his project, share videos of the community, and even give a live tour of the property!

This is a super cool event and I'm really looking forward to hearing what he has to share, especially because this is self-made coliving, self-funded, and self-run! Lots of learnings here... โœจ

Join us on Thursday if you're interested! Trust me, this one will be gold ๐Ÿ™ƒ
