It's #FreeSpeechWeek - but is there reason to celebrate? With freedom of speech under fire from increasing surveillance around the globe our basic human rights - the right to privacy and the right to freedom of expression - are trampled upon in too many ways.

The promise of the free and open internet has failed and in its place a system of chilling effects has been instituted.

KOSA threatens to censor online content under the guise of protecting the children.πŸ€” @MarshaBlackburn and @SenBlumenthal's bill contains vague language that will push censorship in America rather than protect the nation's youth.🚫

RT @maxschrems: Second on the bigger issue:

100% agreed on the pluralism, but for 10 years Swire, Karry and many more produce "research" which is aimed at DPAs and Courts and totally going one way. Millions must have been paid for that and "pluralism" and "free speech" on one (!) side of the argument. It seems @futureofprivacy or CIPL/CBDF was not thaaaat interested to fund the (vast majority) of researchers that would take a different view. So it's not about freedom of speech, but about pushing one view with a lot of cash.

This research and reports were rejected over and over again and will probably be rejected in the future, so it's kind of an American ("throw money at it") approach that luckily is repelled largely by @EU_EDPB or @EUCourtPress so far, but we are obviously aware of "discussion afternoons" held in Luxembourg and alike.

Now obviously they pay for the prestige of a "Professor" or the brother of the US Foreign Minister, which are public jobs, paid by the taxpayer - and this is where it gets really problematic IMHO, because the public entrusted academics with credibility, that is quickly lost if every Professor knows that publishing in one direction gets you paid contracts, while going in the other direction gets you a handshake.

And here we are at the pluralism issue: Don't you think it's a problem for a fair, fact-based, academic and pluralistic debate if (a minority of) researches are paid to publish into one direction, they even start setting up a US "non-profit" dedicated to this one topic that has a budget of most EU privacy non-profits and the other side is working from their student apartment?

Not sure what @UGrenobleAlpes ethics codes say about external funding by the industry, but I'd put it in the words of a Professor I recently talked about this problem: "See there is a reason why my colleagues drive a Porsche and I ride the subway."

I know you may disagree, but part of #FreedomOfSpeech is also to raise the questions above and I am very much looking forward to some answers...

PS: Still leaves the question open how much you got for this - obviously this is absolutely your private matter, but the starting point for your US colleagues is usually €100k, I got told - so hope they did not rip you off... πŸ˜‰

Last week we fell for a stupid @gmail hoax.

We'd like to apologize for sharing this image without fact checking first.

Particularly with the rise of #AI it's so important that we all stay vigilant & not fall for #FakeNews.

#FreedomOfSpeech matters, but so does the #truth. https://t.co/pM6MwKb1xB
