✳️ How much electricity 🇪🇹 Ethiopia needs to develop? Part II.

In July of 2020 Ethiopian government (Planning and Development Position) have presented “10 Years Development Plan 2021-2030”. One can find it online both in Amharic and in English.

🔺This plan aspires to make Ethiopia an “African Beacon of Prosperity”. First of all, by improving income levels and wealth accumulations “so that every citizen would be able to satisfy their basic needs and aspirations” — beautiful and noble objective.

🔺Ten year plan sets ambitious economic goals that cannot be reached without ambitious growth in electricity production.

Let’s focus on 👨🏾‍🏭 manufacturing and development objectives:

1️⃣ increase average capacity utilization of the manufacturing industry from 50% to 85%

2️⃣ raise the number of small and medium-scale manufacturing enterprises from 2,000 to 11,000

3️⃣ create a total of 5 million new job opportunities in the manufacturing industry

🔺@10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia estimates the amount of new electricity generation that is required to support those objectives as 600 MW.

The most cost-effective solution is 🔆 off-grid solar+battery - cheapest energy generation that is built right at the location of energy consumption.

In year 1962 future Nobel Prize winner and U.S. Poet Laureate Joseph Brodsky was just 22 years old.

He lived in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) and visited Moscow 3-4 times a year: to hide from oppression by KGB and to see the most important literary figure in his life: poet Anna Akhmatova.

One of such visits lead to the most ❤️beautiful poem .

== Moscow Carol (1962) ==

In such an inexplicable blue,
Upon the stonework to embark,
The little ship of glowing hue
Appears in Alexander Park.

The little lamp, a yellow rose,
Arising -- ready to retreat -
Above the people it adores;
Near strangers' feet.

In such an inexplicable blue
The drunkards' hive, the loonies' team.
A tourist takes a snapshot to
Have left the town and keep no dream.

On the Ordynka street you find
A taxicab with fevered gnomes,
And dead ancestors stand behind
And lean on domes.

A poet strolls across the town
In such an inexplicable blue.
A doorman watches him looking down
And down the street and catches the flu.

An old and handsome cavalier
Moves down a lane not worth a view,
And wedding-party guests appear
In such an inexplicable blue.

Behind the river, in the haar,
As a collection of the blues -
The yellow walls reflecting far
The hopeless accent of the Jews.

You move to Sunday, to despair
(From love), to the New Year, and there
Appears a girl you cannot woo -
Never explaining why she's blue.

Then in the night the town is lost;
A train is clad in silver plush.
The pallid puff, the draught of frost
Will sheathe your face until you blush.

The honeycomb of windows fits
The smell of halva and of zest,
While Christmas Eve is carrying its
Mince pies abreast.

Watch your New Year come in a blue
Seawave across the town terrain
In such an inexplicable blue,
As if your life can start again,
As if there can be bread and light -
A lucky day -- and something's left,
As if your life can sway aright,
Once swayed aleft.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #1/3)

☝🏾 Our continent is not only well able to feed itself, but can become a bread basket of the world.

🔺 In Ethiopia, we have been working diligently to enhance agricultural productivity in the past four years. We have commenced an initiative that encourages small-holder farmers to farm in clusters that enable them to benefit from irrigation and mechanization.

🔺 Ethiopia is undertaking a massive campaign to encourage both large- and small-scale poultry, dairy, livestock farming, as well as urban agriculture.

🟡 I call upon our African Union and development partners to support in unleashing this potential.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #2/3)

🤨 Global meetings on climate change are rich with the rhetoric of climate justice, the just transition, common but differentiated responsibilities of parties.

🔺These talks, however, are hardly ever backed up with action. And Africa cannot wait.

🇪🇹 Ethiopia is definitely not waiting for solutions to come from outside. Instead, we are doing all we can to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

☝🏾 For my country, investment in environmental protection is not a charity; it is driven by enlightened self-interest. For us in Ethiopia, environmental protection is about everything we are as a society. It is about our ability to feed ourselves. It is about our ability to conserve water and other precious resources. It is about our ability to preserve peace between adjoining communities. It is about our survival as a nation.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #3/3)

🌍 African countries are engaged in environmental conservation, reforestation and massive investment in the generation of clean energy from hydro sources. In short, Africa is leading the world in areas that matter for all humanity and it is time for Africa's leadership role to be recognized and institutionalized.

☝🏾 I would like to use this opportunity to lend my voice yet again for Africa to be represented on the UN Security Council with at least one permanent seat and double non-permanent seats. Moreover, Africa also needs to have proportionate representation at the G7, the G20 and similar global forums.

🔆 Carbon Credits — should you care?

African Business Forum at Sheraton Addis was a beautiful congregation of beautiful people in beautiful suits speaking beautiful things. @gepp @seforall @uneca

🟡 The subject of the Forum is little exotic: carbon credits, voluntary carbon markets and compliance/regulatory carbon markets.

🔺 I invite you to decide for yourself if you should be interested in carbon credits.

☝🏾 If you generate 300kW-h for 8 hours, you will use approximately 800 liters of diesel oil per day.

✌🏾 800 liters of diesel oil when burned create 2,112 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2)

🖖🏾 In 300 working days, it will be 633.6 tons of CO2. In 5 years - 3,168 tons.

👋🏾 Carbon credit goes for $50-70 per ton. So 5 years of saving the planet will bring you $150,000-200,000, covering roughly 10% of your costs.

✊🏾 The situation will look different if carbon credits can be received for the whole lifespan of solar installation (15 years), and the price will be of at least $100 per ton. This way you will receive $950,000.

✳️ We will be watching African carbon market and inform you about it’s developments.

Brodsky’s Nobel lecture - post 1/4

✳️ On June 4, 1972, Joseph Brodsky was put onto plane to Vienna by plaincloth KGB officers. A non-conformist alien in a totalitarian USSR he immediately found his place and role in free world. He has been Poet-in-Residence and Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan, Queens College, Smith College, Columbia University, and Cambridge University in England. In 1978, Brodsky was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at Yale University, and on May 23, 1979, he was inducted as a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1981, Brodsky was a recipient of MacArthur Foundation’s award for his works of “genius”. In 1986 a collection of Brodsky’s essays on the arts and politics won the National Book Critic’s Award for Criticism.

In 1987 Joseph Brodsky was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature - “for an all-embracing authorship, imbued with clarity of thought and poetic intensity”. He delivered his Nobel lecture in Russian, with an authorized English translation.

🖋️

“For someone rather private, for someone who all his life has preferred his private condition to any role of social significance, and who went in this preference rather far – far from his motherland to say the least, for it is better to be a total failure in democracy than a martyr or the crème de la crème in tyranny – for such a person to find himself all of a sudden on this rostrum is a somewhat uncomfortable and trying experience.

This sensation is aggravated not so much by the thought of those who stood here before me as by the memory of those who have been bypassed by this honor, who were not given this chance to address ‘urbi et orbi’, as they say, from this rostrum and whose cumulative silence is sort of searching, to no avail, for release through this speaker.

The only thing that can reconcile one to this sort of situation is the simple realization that – for stylistic reasons, in the first place – one writer cannot speak for another writer, one poet for another poet especially; that had Osip Mandelstam, or Marina Tsvetaeva, or Robert Frost, or Anna Akhmatova, or Wystan Auden stood here, they couldn’t have helped but speak precisely for themselves, and that they, too, might have felt somewhat uncomfortable.

These shades disturb me constantly; they are disturbing me today as well. In any case, they do not spur one to eloquence. In my better moments, I deem myself their sum total, though invariably inferior to any one of them individually. For it is not possible to better them on the page; nor is it possible to better them in actual life. And it is precisely their lives, no matter how tragic or bitter they were, that often move me – more often perhaps than the case should be – to regret the passage of time. If the next life exists – and I can no more deny them the possibility of eternal life than I can forget their existence in this one – if the next world does exist, they will, I hope, forgive me and the quality of what I am about to utter: after all, it is not one’s conduct on the podium which dignity in our profession is measured by.”

🏆 87.5 millions euro for solar energy projects for commercial and industrial companies

French financier Rgreen Invest and Echosys Advisory-backed investment advisor Echosys Invest have closed a new fund to finance solar power production across Africa.

🌍Afrigreen Debt Impact Fund, totalling €87.5 million (US$92.53 million), will be used to finance on- and off-grid solar power plants for small and medium-sized commercial and industrial consumers in the continent, with a focus on West and Central Africa.

Fund will support 20-30 projects in Ghana and Nigeria using local currencies — support for this is provided by International Development Association (IDA)’s “Private Sector Window Local Currency Facility”. Average project will be worth €5 million covering 30-50% of necessary financing.

😎 My conversation with Samson Berhane was recently featured by @Sun-Connect-News.

There are several points that I am desperately trying to get to readers:

(1) Ethiopia needs at least TEN times more electricity that it generates today
(2) Binding and maintaining national electric grid for Ethiopia is prohibitively expensive
(3) Solar off-grid generation is always a least-cost and by far the fastest solution
