☠️ Headline is very eye-catching: “CHINA WILL BAN EXPORT OF SOLAR PANELS”.

But headlines are not a story. The story is completely different. Chinese government is considering to stop exporting of technology to produce solar wafers.

🔆 Production of solar wafers (one of core ingredients of solar photovoltaic panels) is very expensive, extremely energy intensive and quite dirty process, that is presently done mostly in China and that requires raw materials that are being mined mostly in China.

🇨🇳Chinese decision to ban export of this technology HAS NOTHING TO DO with export of solar panels and components for assembling of solar panels. Relax :-)

✳️ How much electricity 🇪🇹 Ethiopia needs to develop? Part I.

In July of 2020 Ethiopian government (Planning and Development Position) have presented “10 Years Development Plan 2021-2030”. One can find it online both in Amharic and in English.

🔺This plan aspires to make Ethiopia an “African Beacon of Prosperity”. First of all, by improving income levels and wealth accumulations “so that every citizen would be able to satisfy their basic needs and aspirations” — beautiful and noble objective.

🔺Ten year plan sets ambitious economic goals that cannot be reached without ambitious growth in electricity production.

Let’s focus on 👨🏾‍🌾 agriculture development objectives:

1️⃣ increase in crop production by 1.7 times (including 4.3 times increase in crop production through irrigation)

2️⃣ increase in milk production by 2.7 times

3️⃣ increase in meat production by 5.8 times

4️⃣ increase in egg and chicken meat production by 2 times

5️⃣ increase in fish production by 4.2 times

6️⃣ increase in honey production by 2.5 times

🔺@10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia estimates the amount of new electricity generation that is required to support those objectives as 100-150 MW.

The most cost-effective solution is 🔆 off-grid solar+battery - cheapest energy generation that is built right at the location of energy consumption.

🇿🇦 Cyril Ramaphosa - President of South Africa - have declared “state of disaster” over situation with electricity.

🔲 South Africans have 16+ hours of electricity every day.

👴🏾 My family in Summit condominium area in Addis sometimes has electricity for 6-7 hours a day.

☝🏾We know that 85% of 🇿🇦 South Africans have access to electricity while 🇪🇹 50% of Ethiopians do not.

🫣 Shall our government declare “state of disaster”?

🆕 Innovation isn’t necessarily a new invention, new product, or new service.

📈 Innovation can present itself in a form of new business model - a business model that introduces existing technology into existing value chain thus producing revolutionary outcome.

🔆 At @10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia we are developing and implementing “Double Green” business model - providing “green” (environment-friendly) energy that brings “green” (financial) advantage.

🎉 Last week this work was awarded with honorary diploma of Global Energy Association - “For contribution to the development of energy in the Africa region”.

Let’s focus on 👨🏾‍🏭 manufacturing and development objectives:

1️⃣ increase average capacity utilization of the manufacturing industry from 50% to 85%

2️⃣ raise the number of small and medium-scale manufacturing enterprises from 2,000 to 11,000

3️⃣ create a total of 5 million new job opportunities in the manufacturing industry

🔺@10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia estimates the amount of new electricity generation that is required to support those objectives as 600 MW.

The most cost-effective solution is 🔆 off-grid solar+battery - cheapest energy generation that is built right at the location of energy consumption.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #1/3)

☝🏾 Our continent is not only well able to feed itself, but can become a bread basket of the world.

🔺 In Ethiopia, we have been working diligently to enhance agricultural productivity in the past four years. We have commenced an initiative that encourages small-holder farmers to farm in clusters that enable them to benefit from irrigation and mechanization.

🔺 Ethiopia is undertaking a massive campaign to encourage both large- and small-scale poultry, dairy, livestock farming, as well as urban agriculture.

🟡 I call upon our African Union and development partners to support in unleashing this potential.

#AbiyAhmedAli #ethiopia #weneedelectrity
Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #2/3)

🤨 Global meetings on climate change are rich with the rhetoric of climate justice, the just transition, common but differentiated responsibilities of parties.

🔺These talks, however, are hardly ever backed up with action. And Africa cannot wait.

🇪🇹 Ethiopia is definitely not waiting for solutions to come from outside. Instead, we are doing all we can to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

☝🏾 For my country, investment in environmental protection is not a charity; it is driven by enlightened self-interest. For us in Ethiopia, environmental protection is about everything we are as a society. It is about our ability to feed ourselves. It is about our ability to conserve water and other precious resources. It is about our ability to preserve peace between adjoining communities. It is about our survival as a nation.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #3/3)

🌍 African countries are engaged in environmental conservation, reforestation and massive investment in the generation of clean energy from hydro sources. In short, Africa is leading the world in areas that matter for all humanity and it is time for Africa's leadership role to be recognized and institutionalized.

☝🏾 I would like to use this opportunity to lend my voice yet again for Africa to be represented on the UN Security Council with at least one permanent seat and double non-permanent seats. Moreover, Africa also needs to have proportionate representation at the G7, the G20 and similar global forums.

🔆 Carbon Credits — should you care?

African Business Forum at Sheraton Addis was a beautiful congregation of beautiful people in beautiful suits speaking beautiful things. @gepp @seforall @uneca

🟡 The subject of the Forum is little exotic: carbon credits, voluntary carbon markets and compliance/regulatory carbon markets.

🔺 I invite you to decide for yourself if you should be interested in carbon credits.

☝🏾 If you generate 300kW-h for 8 hours, you will use approximately 800 liters of diesel oil per day.

✌🏾 800 liters of diesel oil when burned create 2,112 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2)

🖖🏾 In 300 working days, it will be 633.6 tons of CO2. In 5 years - 3,168 tons.

👋🏾 Carbon credit goes for $50-70 per ton. So 5 years of saving the planet will bring you $150,000-200,000, covering roughly 10% of your costs.

✊🏾 The situation will look different if carbon credits can be received for the whole lifespan of solar installation (15 years), and the price will be of at least $100 per ton. This way you will receive $950,000.

✳️ We will be watching African carbon market and inform you about it’s developments.

😎 My conversation with Samson Berhane was recently featured by @Sun-Connect-News.

There are several points that I am desperately trying to get to readers:

(1) Ethiopia needs at least TEN times more electricity that it generates today
(2) Binding and maintaining national electric grid for Ethiopia is prohibitively expensive
(3) Solar off-grid generation is always a least-cost and by far the fastest solution

🇺🇸 United States of America is the largest donor in 🇪🇹 Ethiopia. In 2022, USA gave almost 2 billion dollars in humanitarian assistance and 3.65 million dollars to advance democracy and respect for human rights (AKA “meddling in internal affairs”).

👎🏾 In the same 2022, economic development programs and technical assistance by USA - 0 dollars.

🔺 There is huge potential for cooperation between USA and Ethiopia in renewable energy, sustainable and productive agriculture, e-mobility and so many other areas.

🔆 Hamlet Tunian, CEO and Co-founder of RECOM, leading European PV module manufacturer have announced that his family foundation have donated a 1.7MW solar park to the central compound of Armenian Apostolic Church that hosts Mother Cathedral of the Church, the monastery and monastic brotherhood, the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians and other religious and cultural institutions.

🇪🇹 Ethiopia has accepted Christianity as a state religion only 3 years after 🇦🇲 Armenia did it.

We should follow Hamlet’s lead in building solar electricity generation for Ethiopian churches and monasteries.

Mobile payments are convenient and efficient. Easy flow of money will facilitate commerce and enable further proliferation of pay-as-you-go financing. This is beneficial for solar energy business - from solar pumps (@Solar Village) and solar lamps (@Fosera) to large-scale solutions for commercial farming that @10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia brings to Ethiopia.

Still, we need to ask ourselves if rapid introduction of the largest regional player to our very undeveloped market will help or get in a way of building Ethiopian financial system?

Embassies of 🇪🇹Ethiopia, 🇪🇷Eritrea, 🇰🇪Kenya and other African countries have hosted a magnificent evening on the occasion of 60th anniversary of African Union.

🔆 We had great conversation with Ambassador H.E. Tesfaye Yitayh about great benefits that Ethiopian economy - specifically off-grid electrification of agriculture and agro processing - will get from Israeli experience, technology and know-how. I am certain that we will expand on those topics further.

🎉 This official celebration was unlike any other. Don’t take my word — watch video to see what I am talking about :-)

✳️ Five truths about energy transition in Africa

1️⃣ energy transition in Africa in 2023 is the same as the energy transition in Great Britain in 1740
2️⃣ the energy transition in Africa is from muscle energy to electricity
3️⃣ most countries in Africa don’t have plentiful coal/oil/gas reserves, therefore solar/wind energies the cheapest and most available
4️⃣ most African countries do not have developed national electric grid, and it’s construction is prohibitively expensive
5️⃣ African electricity consumption in households is nominal, and the peak is during daytime when industries work, that makes intermittent sources an optimal solution

#ethiopia #solarpower
100 Gigawatt of electricity per 53 million people of Kenya, by 2040.

This excellent, smart and certainly ambitious goal was presented by Kenyan president Mr. Wiliam Ruto at the African Climate Summit few days ago.

Ethiopian population is at least 220% of Kenya, so we shall aim at 220 Gigawatt.
