👮🏻‍♂️ Recently, our enforcement officers took action against a retailer, impounding 5 non-compliant active mobility devices (AMDs) and 1 unregistered vehicle. This follows an earlier operation in the Old Choa Chu Kang area, where 9 unregistered vehicles were seized.

We detected a total of 8 offences, including:
🚫 Displaying non-compliant power-assisted bicycles (#PAB) and personal mobility devices (#PMD)
🚫Failing to display warning notice

🧑🏻‍⚖️ Under Section 34(1) of the Active Mobility Act 2017, selling non-compliant AMDs is an offence. Individuals face penalties up to $20,000 and/or 24 months jail, while companies face fines up to $40,000.

👨🏻‍⚖️ Keeping or using an unregistered vehicle is also an offence under Section 10(1) of the Road Traffic Act, with penalties up to $2,000 and/or 3 months jail.

⚠️ #Reminder For safety, all AMDs and vehicles must meet approval and registration requirements before being used on roads and paths. 🛴🚲

📢 We’ve completed our investigations on the East-West Line (#EWL) service disruption from 25-30 Sep 2024.

As the recovered axle box, axle bearings, and chevron springs were badly damaged, it was not possible to establish a definitive root cause.

🔍 The findings show that degraded grease on the incident train’s axle box was a likely cause of failure. The axle box had generated sufficient heat to burn the chevron springs’ rubber, which eventually caused it to dislodge near Dover station. The incident train also caused severe damage to the tracks and trackside equipment as it travelled towards Ulu Pandan Depot. 🚆

LTA also found that SMRT had twice extended the train’s overhaul interval beyond its stipulated maintenance requirement of 500,000km. These extensions were done based on internal procedures, without detailed engineering and risk assessment as axle box failures are uncommon.

LTA will impose a financial penalty of $3million on SMRT. This will go to the Public Transport Fund to help lower-income families with their public transport expenditures. ⚠️
