Russia considering wheat export quota of 9 million tons

Russia, one of the world’s biggest wheat exporters, has been taking steps to slow sales abroad to curb domestic food inflation. It’s also introduced a floating tax on grain exports, though the measures have had limited effects on total seasonal volumes.

However, the decision will be closely watched in the global wheat market, which is facing increasingly tight supplies after crops around the world were hit by droughts, frost and heavy rain.

Benchmark prices in Chicago reached a nine-year high last month.

GRAINS-Wheat and corn up over 20% in 2021, soybeans edge to third year of gains

U.S. corn, wheat and soybean futures were set to post yearly gains, with strong demand and supply constraints in some key production areas of the globe underpinning the markets throughout 2021.

Corn futures Sv1, which have jumped 23.4% this year, have paced the grain markets, supported by increased feed usage by livestock as well as a rebound in the ethanol sector as drivers returned to the roads due to easing COVID-19 restrictions. The corn market has risen for four years in a row.

Wheat futures were up 20.6% for the year and were on track for their fifth straight yearly gain and their biggest since 2010. Crop problems in Australia and worries about export curbs in Russia have supported the wheat market throughout 2021.

Soybean futures, which hit their highest level since 2012 in May, were up just 2.4% for the year, as a bumper harvest in the United States and good growing weather in Brazil have pressured prices during the fourth quarter.

Russia and Ukraine account for 29% of global wheat trade.

If that wheat stops moving, global food supply gets REAL interesting, real fast.

Cargill, global farm commodities [FOOD] trader, has confirmed one of its chartered ocean vessels was “hit by a projectile” on the Black Sea. The vessel remained seaworthy [ie didn’t sink], but as you can imagine, no one will be exporting food through this passage at this point.

Indeed, Maersk has halted all port calls in Ukraine.

Bunge Ltd has suspended operations in its Black Sea grains port in Nikolaev, Ukraine.

Video report on effects on world food supply forthcoming - stay tuned @iceagefarmer .

Merchant ships hit by missiles; Grain/fert exports STOP in Ukraine/Russia

Ukraine & Russia grains--30% of world global exports--are no longer moving as three merchant ships have been hit by missiles in the Black Sea, including one chartered by Cargill to move grains. Brazil is frantic after fertilizer imports from Russia are threatened. The global food trade is coming to a screeching halt and food prices are exploding even further as the conflict escalates. Christian breaks down the developments from just the last 48 hours in this Ice Age Farmer special report.

Analysts / "experts" are now echoing what I'd said last week about the effects of this conflict on world grain supplies

"If the conflict is prolonged -- three months, four months from now -- I feel the consequences could be really serious, wheat will need to be rationed," said Andree Defois, president of consultant Strategie Grains.

Kyiv-based researcher UkrAgroConsult warned, "the chain of product creation, from cultivation to port shipments, is paralyzed."

This is, at its heart, an attack on the food supply.

Wheat prices EXPLODE, limit up. See above post for why.

I have long said “Watch wheat.” It is THE key strategic grain. Last time wheat prices soared this high, presaged the Arab Spring….

Wheat prices soar to highest since 2008, trade ‘limit up’ on potential Russia supply hit

The price of wheat on Tuesday rose to its highest levels in more than a decade, with traders concerned about global supply disruption as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine advanced.

Wheat futures rose 5.35% to 984 cents per bushel as of 11:30 a.m. ET, at the highs of Tuesday’s session. That marks the highest price since April 4, 2008, when wheat traded as high as 985.5 cents per bushel.

Shippers Cut Off Russia - Wheat Price Explodes - Cyberattacks on Shipping

As Major shipping companies are cutting service to Russia and UK bans shipments from Russia, the disruption to global food supply is now a lasting one. What effect will cutting out the breadbasket of the world have, and--more importantly--who benefits from doing so? Christian breaks it down in this Ice Age Farmer broadcast.
