"Mary in the Qur'an", Lecture 5
speaker: Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Dec 8, 2024
Chapters:
0:00 Greetings & Introductory Remarks
1:55 List of Surahs related to the Hazrat Maryam in Qur'an in Chronological Order of Revelation and the Order of the Verses.
3:29 Nativity derived from Latin means the birth of Jesus and the events surrounding and after that. In Qur'an, nativity is discussed in verses 22 to 33 of the Surah 19 (Maryam).
7:30 Reading the English translation of the verses 22-33 of Surah 19 (Maryam).
11:49 Commentary on verse Q19:22 from Tafsir al-Mizan, by Allamah Muhammad Hussein Tabatabai. A discussion about the keyword قصی (qassiy) remote.
14:25 Whether Mary was alone when giving birth to Jesus or as the Christian sources indicate Joseph Carpenter was with her. Quranic verses in the first appearance suggest she was alone, but it will be argued in a following lecture they do not contradict with Joseph the Carpenter being with Mary. A discussion of the Family of Imran and who were part of this family?
20:15 Commentary on verse Q19:23 from Tafsir al-Mizan. The prayer of Maryam primarily reflects the child birth experience by a woman and, secondarily, maybe due to her unique situation.
26:00 Commentary on verse Q19:24 from Tafsir al-Mizan. Most probably, the one who calls Mary from beneath her is the child, Jesus, after being born, not the spirit or an angel.
31:35 Commentary on verse Q19:25 and Q19:26 from Tafsir al-Mizan. Parallelism with the story of Zachariah and birth of Yahya. The three features of the location of birth of Jesus: Remoteness, Palm Tree, and Flowing Spring.
36:04 Commentary on verse Q19:27 from Tafsir al-Mizan. Fariyyan, indicates something that is serious and grave as well as unprecedented.
38:14 Commentary on verse Q19:28 from Tafsir al-Mizan. A discussion of the phrase "O Sister of Aaron" with which Maryam was called.
49:55 Commentary on verse Q19:29 from Tafsir al-Mizan. A discussion of cradle (مهد) used in this verse.
54:45 Commentary on verses Q19:30-33 from Tafsir al-Mizan. The speech of Jesus in cradle.
1:00:31 Looking to some of the narrations (hadiths) both from shi'i and sunni sources related to the verses Q19:22-33.
1:26:30 Brief comments on some of the verses 22 to 33 from Surah 19 (Maryam) based on the Study Qur'an English translation and commentary. Wahb ibn Munabbih (655-737AD), who was familiar with the Jewish and Christian scriptures, reports that Mary’s pregnancy was known to one of her relatives named Joseph, who also served in the Temple and helped her during her pregnancy (quoted in Fakhr Razi and Tabari's Tafsirs). According to some commentators, Jesus’ sudden ability to speak, like Zachariah’s sudden inability to do so in Q19:10, was a temporary matter and that after delivering the statements recounted in Q19:30–33 Jesus returned to the ordinary state of an infant as yet incapable of speech (Razi, Qurtubi). The miraculous and temporary gift of speech was bestowed upon him in order to absolve his mother of any blame or suspicion (Qurtubi). Al-Ṭabarisī notes, however, that some claimed that Jesus’ intellect was perfected and he was a prophet from this time onward, in which case his miraculous ability to speak as an infant continued beyond this encounter with his mother’s family.

Dec 15, 2024
Chapters:
0:00 Greetings & Introductory Remarks
2:41 List of Surahs related to the Hazrat Maryam in Qur'an in Chronological Order of Revelation and the Order of the Verses.
4:02 The Nativity, story of the birth of Jesus are mentioned in the following sources: Qur’an19:22-33; Luke2:1-20; Matthew1:18-25&2:1-23; ProtoGospel of James15-24; Gospel of PseudoMatthew8-13&20; Gospel of the Birth of Mary 7-10.
5:05 Reading the English translation of the verses 22-33 of Surah 19 (Maryam). Three important feature regarding the location of the birth of Jesus: Remoteness, The Palm Tree and the flowing Spring. Two additional important points to have in mind from these verses are addressing Mary as "O sister of Aaron" and the miracle of the Jesus as a child speaking in cradle.
8:57 Relative geographical location of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth on the map.
11:06 A brief discussion of the Chronology of the time of the writing of the Christian sources which mention the birth of Jesus and events surrounding and after it.
13:51 Gospel of Luke2:1-40 Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and his presentation to the temple in Jerusalem and the return of Mary and Joseph the Carpenter back to Nazareth and Jesus growing in Nazareth.
22:45 Matthew1:18-25 (Birth of Jesus) and Matthew2:1-24 Visit of the Wise Men from the East (The Magis), Flight to Egypt.
33:12 Comparison between the Nativity narratives in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. People and movies usually instead of comparing the two narratives merge them and make a unified story, but if you compare them they have significant contradictory differences with each other and both are different from the Quranic narrative of nativity.
36:41 ProtoEvangelium of James17-20. The birth of Jesus happens in a remote place (a cave) in the middle of the way between Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Besides the Joseph the Carpenter one of his sons from previous marriage are with Mary. She apparently gave birth in a cave and two women probably both midwives visit her and Jesus after birth in the cave. The Proto-Gospel of James nativity narrative is different from the two canonical gospels Luke and Matthew and also from the Qur'an but it is not necessarily in contradiction with Qur'an and agrees in at least one crucial point that birth of Jesus happened in a remote place.
49:09 Some general discussion regarding the theories of formation (writing, compilation, redaction and edition) of the ProtoGospel of James relying on the book by George Themelis Zervos titled "The Protoevangelium of James: Greek text, English Translation and the Critical Introduction" in two volumes. The Protoevangelium James has multilayers and its formation somewhat may be similar to the Sulaym ibn Qays Hilali the oldest extant Shi'i hadith book. An ancient true core but with parts being added later or were edited.
1:05:18 Story of Discovery of The Kathisma church(shrine) and its importance and relevance to nativity. Kathisma means seat (Stopping or resting place, مقام). The rock which is at the center of three layer octagonal church (shrine) is most probably the actual birth place of Jesus not the resting or stopping place of Mary before giving birth in a nearby cave (The Protoevangelium of James) or in Bethlehem (later Christian tradition) or on the way escaping to Egypt (PseudoGospel of Matthew), as it was also believed in the Christian tradition.
1:31:08 Connecting the three distinguishing elements of the Quranic nativity story; Remoteness, the Palm Tree and the flowing Spring and even addressing Mary as "Sister of Aaron" with the location of the Kathisma shrine.
1:41:07 The Gospel of Pseudo Matthew 20 The Miracle of the Palm Tree and Fresh Spring but in the context of the escape to Egypt.

Dec 22, 2024
Chapters:
0:00 Greetings & Introductory Remarks
0:29 Reading a few Hadiths for the occasion of the Birthday of Hazrat Fatima.
1:58 Reading the English translation of the Q66:11-12 verses.
3:01 List of Surahs related to the Hazrat Maryam in Qur'an in Chronological Order of Revelation and the Order of the Verses.
4:49 The special problems/points these lecture series wants to address: 1) The Family of Imran ( آل عمران) and Family of Jesus; 2) The Sister of Aaron; 3) Joseph the Carpenter (3: 44 , 23: 50 , 3: 36 , 19: 29); 4) James (Jacob) the Just brother of Jesus and the fate of the true Christianity; 5) Who was the Ancestor of the mother of the twelfth Imam, Imam Mahdi, Nargis Khatoon, Simon the Cephas or Simon the Cleophas (Cleophas or Cleopas) brother of Jesus and James.
26:51 The three basic steps of Jewish Marriage at the time of Mary and Jesus.
28:33 A few Qur'anic verses that can hint indirectly to Joseph the Carpenter Q3:44, Q3:36, Q19:20, Q23:50, and Q19:29. Qur'an consciously and systematically has eliminated Joseph the Carpenter from the Mary's story similarly Amram father of Moses is also eliminated from the Moses birth story and he is not mentioned in the Qur'an.
50:11 Another look to the Hebrew meaning of the name of the father of Mary Joachim (Yəhoyāqim יהויקים) which means “He whom Yahweh (God, Allah) set up (built, erected,..)” which leads to the conclusion that "Imran Allah" (عمران الله) the name of the father of Mary in Qur'an is the Arabic translation of his name in Hebrew.
53:52 A look to the usage of word Family (آل) in the Qur'an whether the families mentioned in Qur'an like where limited in number or extended in lineage and number by looking to the Family of Lot (آل لوط). Hence arguing that Family of Imran most probably included more than Just Imran, his wife and Mary and Jesus. this family was extended by other children of Mary (brothers and sisters of Jesus).
56:29 Brothers of Jesus: James, Joseph, Simon and Judas. Mark6:3 and Matthew13:55.
59:18 The Chronology of the Writing of the New Testament Books: Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and Epistles of James and Judas
1:00:13 The Twelve sons of Jacob. The lineage of the Israelites. Royal (Kingly) Lineage ( Descendants of Judah who was ancestor of David and Solomon) and Priestly Lineage (Descendants Levi, who was the ancestor of Moses and Aaron).
1:08:28 The Genealogy of Jesus. Two Genealogies. In Gospel of Matthew It is through Joseph the Carpenter the step father of Jesus. In Gospel of Matthew it is through Mary mother of Jesus and then through her father Joachim (Eliakim, Heli or Eli are abbreviations of Joachim). Genealogy in Matthew starts from Abraham descends to David the King and Prophet and then descends through his son Solomon to Joseph the Carpenter and then Jesus, while genealogy in Luke starts from Jesus and ascends to Mary and to Joachim and then ascends to Nathan the other son of David and then to David and then ascends to Abraham and then to Noah and then to Adam, which interestingly has been referred to as son of God.
1:30:18 Dual or mixed Lineage of Mary. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a direct descendant of King David(Royal, Kingly Lineage) but she also had significant bloodline ties to a Levite or priestly lineage descended from Aaron. That is her descendants could take both Royal and Priestly duties. In the Dead Sea Scrolls we encounter a devoutly religious community, usually identified with the Essenes, who expected the coming of three figures— a prophet like Moses (prophet Muhammad?) and the messiahs of Aaron and of Israel (Jesus? and Mahdi?).

Jan 12, 2025
Chapters:
0:00 Greetings & Introductory Remarks
1:49 Reading the English translation of the Q66:11-12 verses.
2:48 Brief review of previous lectures.
3:08 List of Surahs related to the Hazrat Maryam in Qur'an in Chronological Order of Revelation and the Order of the Verses.
4:09 Brief explanation of why verses Q19:34-40 will be discussed while they are not apparently directly related to Mary.
5:32 A look to the main five new points/issues and their interrelation that this lecture series wants to address: 1)The Family of Imran ( آل عمران) and Family of Jesus; 2)The Sister of Aaron; 3)Joseph the Carpenter(3: 44,23: 50,3: 36,19: 29); 4)James (Jacob) the Just brother of Jesus and the fate of the true Christianity; 5)Who was the Ancestor of the mother of the twelfth Imam, Imam Mahdi, Nargis Khatoon Simon the Cephas or Simon the Clophas (Cleophas or Cleopas) brother of Jesus and James.
9:03 Review of Genealogy of Jesus, Mary and Joseph the Carpenter as it is listed in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The dual Priestly(Aaronic) and Royal (Davidic) lineage of Mary and Jesus. the Dead Sea Scrolls devout community were anticipating a prophet like Moses and the two messiahs one from Davidic and one from Aaronic lineage.
24:54 The Genealogy of Mary on the basis of a ancient Syriac manuscript found in Sinai peninsula(Sinai Syr.16). A different tradition in which the name of the father and mother of Mary are named as to be Zadoq (صادق) and Dina instead of Joachim and Anna(Hannah or Anne), which is not necessarily contradictory, but with the emphasize on the dual Aaronic and Davidic lineage for Mary and that Mary and Joseph Carpenter were relative and their great grand father, Eleazar, was the same.
41:59 A brief look to the Rhyme and saj' in the surah 19 Maryam and the change in the rhyme in the verses Q19:34-40 respect to the verses before and after it.
50:52 Reading the English translation of Q19:34-40
57:47 Three arguments which are used the Q19:34-40 verses are added latter:1)Different Rhyme, 2)Parenthetical digression and 3)Polemic against Christianity.
59:54 Polemics against Christianity (divinity of Jesus) has been very early in Qur'an for Example Q112 Surah Al-Ikhlas although its first target audience is polytheists of Mecca and Hijaz but has a criticism of divine sonship of Jesus.
1:07:48 An example of adding a verse in Medina to a Meccan surah. Verse 20 of the Surah Muzammil Surah 73.
1:11:32 Examples of change of rhyme in the suras of Qur'an
1:17:03 Tafsir Al-Mizan written by M.H. Tabatabai commentary on verses Q19:34-37. Verses Q19:36 is exactly repeated in Q3:51, Q43:64 and alluded to in Q5:117 and has intertextuality with Gospel of John20:17.

"Mary in the Qur'an", Lecture 8 (2/2)
speaker: Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Jan 12, 2025
Chapters:
1:30:16 The three Views: 1)Traditional View which believes Qur'an is revealed by God and its content does not reflect the knowledge and understanding of Prophet Muhammad but the divine being, 2)Historical-Critical (secular) View (Guillaume Dye and Stephen Shoemaker) that believes Qur'an (specially verses 19:1-63) shows deep knowledge of Christianity in such a degree that could not have exited in Hijaz of first half of 7th century therefore these verses must have been composed by someone and in some place with deep knowledge of Bible, Christianity and Judaism for example in Jerusalem after the conquests. 3)Historical-Critical (Secular) View (Nicolai Sinai and Sean W Anthony) that Qur'an familiarity with Christianity is not that deep that could not have been acquired by diffusion or missionary activity, while we know bible was translated to Arabic after Islam.
1:38:20 Profile of the "Author" of Qur'an Q19:1-63 as described by Guillaume Dye The Qur'anic Mary and the Chronology of the Qur'an. Including deep familiarity with Luke1, Kathisma Church narratives , Jerusalem Marian Liturgy, familiarity with the "Cycle of Abraham" from the book of Genesis of the Bible, some knowledge of Hebrew and Aramaic. good command of Greek and a deep knowledge of Christology that enabled him to write a text of convergence which could work as a kind of biggest common Christological denominator, that could attract the most among the Christian community of his time.

Jan 19, 2025
Chapters:
0:00 Greetings & Introductory Remarks
0:51 Reading the English translation of the Q66:11-12 verses.
1:44 Brief Review of what discussed in the last few lectures.
2:12 List of the Surahs of Qur'an related to the Maryam in the chronological order of revelation and the order with which the verses related to Maryam will be discussed in this series of lectures.
3:49 Reading the English translation of Q19:28 and Q3:42-43 with some comments.
7:54 Tafsir Al-Mizan commentary on Q19:28 and the four opinions in regard to why Mary being referred to as "O sister of Aaron" in Q19:28.
15:00 Looking to some shi'i and sunni hadiths (narrations) related to Q19:28.
36:21 The Study Qur'an commentary on Q19:28.
40:00 Looking to a thread about Q19:28 by Sean W. Anthony (Associate Professor of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Ohio State University), its evaluation and criticism.
58:08 Looking to the views of Guillaume Dye on Q19:28 and Mary being referred to as sister of Aaron in the Qur'an.
1:06:56 Tafsir Al-Mizan Commentary on Q3:42-43.
The questions to focus and address: 1)Whether angels speaking to Mary made her a prophet? 2) What the two choosing and purification in between in Q3:42 is referring to? 3) Was the purification spiritual and moral or had a physical dimension, for example, lack of menstruation, too? 4) Whether the phrase" the women of the world" refers to women before and at the time of Mary or includes women after her, too?
1:25:08 Looking to some shi'i and sunni hadiths (narrations) related to Q3:42-43.
1:30:11 Looking to The Study Qur'an commentary on Q3:42-43.
1:33:35 Intertextuality of Q3:42-43 with Luke1:29, 31&42; ProtoGospel of James Chapter 11 and the The Gospel of the Nativity of Mary Chapter 9 (closest to Qur'an).
1:40:26 A historical survey of the commentaries on Q3:42-43 by looking to the seven commentators: Tabari, Zimakhshari, Fakhr Razi, Muhammad Rashid Rida, Abul al- Futuh Razi, Maula Fath Allah Kashani and Muhammad Husayn Tabatabai, where the first four are considered sunni and the last three shi'i commentators. In this survey, we focused on the 4 questions listed above, especially the meaning of "purification" of Mary and whether it had a physical dimension in addition to spiritual or moral or not.
One important point of emphasize in this lecture was those who understand purification of Mary by God in verse Q3:42 in a legal (fiqhi) framework and consider it means lack of menstruation (which is a latter developed idea and not seen in the early commentators) are wrong in two levels. First their understanding does not match with Qur'an and Christian sources that the reason Mary had to leave the temple and the contest for her guardianship in Q3:44 was her menstruation, and second, this understanding of purification physically not only does not elevate her but by distorting her womaness, impedes her function as an exemplar role model, as it is emphasized in Q66:11-12.

1:22:49 A discussion of the title of the grandfather of Lady Malika: Qaysar Malik al-Rūm & the other characteristics that can be extracted from the hadith.
1:29:50 List of the Byzantine Emperors(Malik) in the 8th Century AD. (None match the characteristics described in the hadith).
1:37:10 Only one Caesar the Armenian Caesar Bardas (r. 856- 866) fits the characteristics. He was the defacto ruler of the empire. Therefore, he was effectively both Caesar & Malik, hence the combined title Caesar-Malik.
1:51:04 Two independent sources corroborate parts of the hadith. Tabari in his history refers to the Caesar Bardas as supreme authority in Byzantine and Hamdan Al-khasibi the founder of the Nusayri sect in his book mentions a Christian female slave with the name Narjis Wardas (Bardas) among the female slaves of the 10th Imam.

9:37 Looking briefly to the documentation (isnad, chain of narrators) of the hadith narrated in the book "Kamāl al-dīn wa Tamām al-Niʿma", compiled by Shaykh Saduq (d. 991AD),in which Lady Malika (Narjis), mother of Imam Mahdi(atfs) introduces herself as: "I am Malīka, daughter of Yashūʿā, son of Qaysar Malik al-Rūm. Among the narrators, we looked in more detail to Abu Al-Hussein Muhammad bin Bahr al-Shaybani.
24:29 Challenge to the suggestion that Lady Malika (Narjis) was a descendant of Mary via brother of Jesus, Simon the Clophas based on the text (متن) of the hadith itself. 27:24 Review of what was said regarding brothers of Jesus, especially James (Jacob) the Just and his martyrdom, with a focus on the three sources Hegesippus, Epiphanius, and Eusebius.

1:10:59 Stating the question to be addressed? Did the Christians worship Mary besides Jesus? Does Quran, as some Christian polemicist alleged, have considered Mary as part of the Trinity (Father, Mother and Son) instead of the common one (Father, Holy Spirit and Son)?
1:18:44 Looking to the two tafsirs "Noor" (Light) and "Nemouneh" (Exemplar) in regard to Q5:116.
1:30:31 Returning to the topic of the brother of Jesus: their missionary activities and the list of the Bishops of Jerusalem.

"Mary in the Qur'an", Lecture 14 (1/2)
speaker: Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Feb 25, 2025
Chapters:
0:00 Greetings & Introductory Remarks
0:49 Reading the English translation of the verses Q66:11-12
1:18 Brief Review of what was discussed in the last few lectures.
1:32 List of the Surahs of Qur'an related to the Maryam in the chronological order of revelation and the order with which the verses related to Maryam will be discussed in this series of lectures.
2:07 Summary of the main topic to be discussed in this lecture in relation to verse Q5:116 in which Quran ascribe worship of Mary to at least some christians. Did historically Christians worship Mary besides Jesus? Does Quran, as some Christian polemicist alleged, have considered Mary as part of the Trinity (Father, Mother and Son) instead of the common one( Father, Holy Spirit and Son) ? Does Quran criticism of some christians target their belief/saying or action/practice?
14:15 Reading the English translation of the following Quranic verses Q4:156-159, Q4:171-172, Q5:17, Q5:72-76, Q5:116-120, which all are two Madinan surahs Al- Nisa and Al- Maidah which are sister surahs.
22:32 Reading the translation of the two verses Q9:31 and Q45:23, which are other instances of people taking (اتخذوا) something besides Allah as God (اله).
28:15 Intertextuality of John20:17 with Quranic verses Q3:51, Q5:72, Q19: 36, Q43: 64 in which Jesus utters the phrase "my God(Lord) and your God(Lord)".
29:43 Looking to the commentary of "The Study Qur'an" on Q5:116.
42:32 Looking to the commentary of the Tafsir Al- Mizan on Q5:116. Al-Mizan emphasizes Quran does not say Christians believe or say Mary is God but taking (effectively) Mary as God. Looking to the historical examples of worshipping Mary by christians as they are furnished by the two sunnintadsirs of Alusi (Ruh al- Ma'ani) & Rashid Reda (Al- Minar).
1:05:56 Two important recent articles on this topic 1) Mohagheghian, Zahra (2024) Mariolatry (Marianism) in the Qur'an- A Comparative Analysis of Islamic and Western Scholarship in Farsi and 2) Goudarzi, Mohsen (2025)The Qur'an's Cultic Trinity-Marian Piety in Late Antiquity and the Qur'an in English.
1:11:05 Four different approaches Islamic commentaries have adopted in regard to the worship of Mary by the Christians in Q5:116.
1:12:33 A Brief look to the 3 main Christian churches at the time of the revelation of Qur'an:1)The Greek-speaking Chalcedonian Church (Melkite, Chalcedonian, Dyophysite) which was the official and royal church of the Byzantine Empire.2)The Syriac-speaking Jacobite Church (Jacobite, Monophysite, Miaphysite) which was more prevalent in the Levant region (Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, ...) and its branch in Egypt was called the Coptic Church.3) The Eastern Syriac-speaking Nestorian Church (Nestorian) which was common in Mesopotamia in Iraq and east of it and was under the protection of the Sassanid Empire.

"Mary in the Qur'an", Lecture 14 (2/2)
speaker: Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Feb 25, 2025
Chapters:
1:16:35 Looking to the discussion of Michel Cuypers on Q5:116 in his book The Banquet which is wholly devoted to the commentary of Surah Al- Maidah. Cuypers rejects that Qur'an is referring to the two sects Collyridians and Maria mites. He also rejects any confusion that may have happened between Mary and the Holy Spirit as the 3rd and feminine element of Trinity. He believes the adoption of the official title Theotokos (Mother of God, God-Bearer) for Mary by the council of Ephesus in (431AD) with all ensuing theological misunderstandings & devotional practices & worship is the main inspiration of the Quranic criticism of the Christians in Q5:116.
1:27:34 From another angle Cuypers states that Quran in 5:116 is effectively arguing that a divine Mary is an inevitable & absurd corollary of a divine Jesus, the reasoning being that if Jesus is divine, Mary should also be divine, for “one cannot imagine a human being begetting a divinity!”
1:32:38 Muna Tatari & Klaus von Stosch state that Qur'an in suggesting some Christians divinizing Mary, Qur’an is targeting the promotion of Mary(ع) as a “goddess of war” in the Byzantine imperial propaganda in the seventh century.
