Special Topic Lecture Series, in English

"Imam Husayn's Movement: Reflections on History, Reasons and Consequences
"

Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi (Bio)
Wayne State University, Michigan

Fridays, Biweekly
From August 12, 2022
8:30 pm (Eastern Time)

Abstract:
The goal of this series of lectures is to provide reflections on the following three questions:

Why did Imam Husayn uprise?
What if Imam Husayn did not uprise?
What was the consequences of Imam Husayn's movement?

In this regard, we will study the history of the rise of Muawiyyah in Syria, establishment of Kufa, the religion and state in the Umayyad period and the differences between the two Sufyanid and Marwanid branches of Umayyads. We will also look at the legacy and imprint of the pro-Umayyad scholars on the Islamic sciences such as Hadith, Fiqh and Sirah.

Our discussion will be historical and therefore non-sectarian.

In this lecture as an introduction to the series we discussed for any event two types of questions can be asked, what and why it happened?

Regarding the Imam Husayn' s movement there is relatively wide agreements in What has happened, but with respect to Why it happened, the reasons, causes, motivations and ends of this event; there exists a broad spectrum of views, which in first categorization they can be divided into historical and ahistorical views. We stated by emphasizing on the function of Imam Husayn as a role model by placing his movement in its historical, social, political, and religious context one can achieve a better understanding of the Why question. In continuation, as a first step we briefly looked at the Arabia's tribal society and the divisions of these tribes in the eve of Islam.

In the second lecture of this series we focused on the early life of Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and his rise to power in Syria partially due to the unique situation after the plague of Amwas which killed 5/6th of the Muslim army and a large size of the native population.
