In the fourth lecture we focused on the Caliphate of the Uthman the third Caliph. We first briefly looked to his life before he became the Caliph. Then we discussed in more detail the dynamic of the electoral council which elected him as the third caliph and the reasons and motivations behind this selection. Finally we looked to the interaction of Imam Ali (a.s.) and Uthman in the final year of the Uthman Caliphate.

در اين سلسله مباحث سه گانه در خصوص نسبت هويت ملی ايرانيان با سه عنصر "اسلام"؛ "ايرانيت" و عنصر زندگی در جهان مدرن سخن گفته ام. در اين جلسات با تشريح چگونگی نسبت ميان تعلق به "امت" و تعلق به "مليت" در اسلام تاريخی توضيح داده ام که اسلام عنصر اصلی در شکلگيری هويت ملی در عصر پسا ساسانی بود و نقش آن را در شکلگيری تمدن و زبان و فرهنگ ايرانی مورد بررسی و تأکيد قرار داده ام. جايگاه تشيع در تشکيل دولت ملی عصر صفوی ايران مورد بحث قرار گرفت و نشان دادم که چگونه منظومه فرهنگی و تمدنی اسلام و تشيع ظرفيتی مهم و بنیادین برای گفتگو و همبستگی ملی را در طول تاريخ ايران پسا ساسانی ايجاد کرد. همچنین تمایزهای منظومه فرهنگی و فکری تشیع با ایدئولوژی های اموی از يک سو و اسلام خوارجی از ديگر سو را بحث کرده ام. در این جلسات همچنین رمز پايداری ايران و هویت ملی در عصر پسا ساسانی با توجه به عناصر تمدنی و فرهنگی اسلام مورد بررسی قرار گرفته است. همچنین اين نکته را از نقطه نظر تاريخی نشان داده ام که اسلام به مثابه تمدن و فرهنگ عنصری جدایی ناپذير از هويت ملی تاريخی ايران است. In the fifth lecture of this series we first, for the occasion of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (ص), briefly looked to the history of the coins in the first century after Hijra.
As late Patricia Crone stated: "It is a striking fact that such documentary evidence as survives from the Sufyanid period makes no mention of the messenger of God at all." That is prophet's name is not mentioned on any coin, official document, letter, inscription or epitaph of the sufyanid period.
This situation significantly changed during and after the civil war which initiated after the uprising of Imam Husayn (a.s) in 61AH.
In 66AH/685AD the first known coin identifying Prophet Muhammad ( ص) as rasul Allah was struck at Bishiapur in Fars by a pro-Zubayrid governor. This is the earliest occurrence of the name prophet "Muhammad" in a dated Muslim extant physical document.
Between years 72 to 74AH a gold coin (dinar) was minted by the caliph Abd al-Malik Al-Marwan which has the following phrases on it: "In the name of God. There is no god but God alone. Muhammad is the messenger of God". This full shahada is perhaps the earliest surviving physical record of it in Arabic.
Thereafter reference to prophet Muhammad as rasul Allah became a standard feature of Arab numismatic inscriptions.
After the brief discussion about history of the coins we discussed the concept of Khalifat al-Allah (Deputy of God) the official title of all of the Umayyad Caliphs and their theory of Caliphate and Prophethood.
One of the claims of the these series of lectures is that the Sufyanids had the intention to eliminate the name of the Prophet Muhammad (ص), but the uprising of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and ensuing civil war was so costly for the Umayyad Caliphate that Marwanid branch was forced to change course.
يُرِيدُونَ لِيُطْفِئُوا نُورَ اللَّـهِ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَاللَّـهُ مُتِمُّ نُورِهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْكَافِرُونَ ﴿٨﴾
هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ ﴿٩﴾
They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light though the faithless should be averse. (Q61:8)
It is He who has sent His Apostle with guidance and the true religion that He may make it prevail over all religions though the polytheists should be averse.(Q61:9)
