"Fatima, Daughter of Muhammad" is a work written by Christopher P. Clohessy a Catholic priest which aims to study the life of Fatima (SA) as recorded in the earliest available Sunni and Shi'i works. Among the impulses for this study were the author’s observation of the many similarities between the Fatima of Shia Islam and the Mary of Catholicism, and the almost complete absence of writings on her life in the English language. These considerations led the author to attempt to critically examine the life of Fatima (SA) using the early extant Arabic texts, but he does not subject these narrations themselves with some exceptions to the rigors of source, textual and historical criticism.
The first chapter, the longest, focuses on the historical biography of Fatimah (SA) and her historical context. In this chapter Sunni historical, biographical, and Hadith works are heavily used with regular indications of agreements and disagreements with Shi'i historical, biographical and Hadith works (both of which range in time from the third century Hijri onwards). This chapter demonstrates a significant role for Fatima (SA) in the events of early Islam but also establishes that she has received much attention in these records, but not as abundantly as in Shi'i sources. The picture of Fatima that arises in this chapter is thoroughly and refreshingly human yet deeply inspiring, and one to which men and women can relate to. The next two chapters each in two parts focuses on supernatural qualities and events in the life of Fatima (SA) mostly relying on Shi'i sources. In chapter 4 after reviewing the key Catholic doctrines about Mary (AS) including occasional references to the apocryphal gospels, author discusses the parallels and differences between the ideas surrounding Fatimah (SA) in Shi'i works, many of which was studied in previous chapters, and the Catholic view of Mary (AS).
This is a thoroughly researched book which offers a fresh examination of the life of Fatima, Prophet Muhammad's (SA) only surviving child, and reveals for the reader her distinctive and fascinating personality.
In this session there will be first a presentation by Prof. Clohessy about the book then Q&A and discussions moderated by Dr. Ghoddoussi.

Abstract
In the second session of this special topic, the perspective of different Islamic traditions with respect to the rūḥ (Spirit), nafs (Soul), qalb (Heart) and 'aql (Intellect) will be further explored. We will conclude by comparing and contrasting two models that describe the origins of the rūḥ; a more traditional Islamic model of the rūḥ and the model proposed by Mulla Sadra.
