Major #defense mechanisms
Defense mechanisms are unconscious mental processes used to protect individuals from uncomfortable thoughts, internal conflicts, and external stresses. Defense mechanisms may be therapeutic to clients with anxiety. However, with excessive use, defense mechanisms may become nontherapeutic because they involve a degree of self-deception and reality distortion that may result in poor interpersonal relationships, irrational behavior, and decreased productivity.

#Schizophrenia is a #mental health disorder that causes chronic or recurrent episodes of psychosis (eg, hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech/thoughts). Clients with schizophrenia can be suspicious of others and often become anxious around unfamiliar individuals and environments. Impaired social and interpersonal functioning (eg, social withdrawal/discomfort) are common negative symptoms of schizophrenia, The nurse can improve the interaction with a client experiencing negative symptoms of schizophrenia by:
• Gaining the client's trust gradually by making brief, frequent contact and showing acceptance and empathy
Assessing the client's readiness to engage with others and avoiding forcing the client to interact if unready
• Praising progress toward increased interactions with others
