different types of gauge catheters for the IV line @takaloo_rn
Picking the proper catheter gauge is incredibly important when starting an IV since certain procedures can only be properly done with certain needles. It would be frustrating for everyone involved if you have to re-stick a patient because you selected the wrong size—as well as painful for them. It may be difficult for you to spot the different sized needle gauges when you're first starting out. Here's some things to remember while reaching for the right fit.
.
Remember: The smaller the number, the bigger the diameter, so the faster the flow rate of fluid being infused through the catheter. Always check with your hospital’s protocol about blood product administration.
💉14 GAUGE (Orange): A 14 gauge needle is usually used to rapidly infuse fluids or blood during surgery or trauma. This insertion is pretty painful due to its size.
💉16 GAUGE (Grey): The 16 gauge is also used for fluids or blood in ICU, surgical, or trauma settings due to its size. It’s incredibly similar to the 14 gauge, just with a lower flow rate.
💉18 GAUGE (Green): This size allows you to do most tasks that the 16 gauge can. This needle is more commonly used for infusions of large amounts of liquids.
💉20 GAUGE (Pink): The 20 gauge needle is better for adult patients with smaller veins and in pediatrics. This size is ideal for IV infusion and blood infusion. You may struggle to insert a 20 gauge into tough skin due to its size.
💉22 GAUGE (Blue): This small size is good for pediatrics and elderly adults and is often used when patients aren’t critically ill or won’t need an IV for very long. Inserting a 22 gauge into tough skin is difficult.
💉24 GAUGE: The 24 gauge needle is used for administering fluids during surgery and trauma among children. Insertion is less painful due to its small size and is incredibly difficult to insert into tough skin.
💉26 GAUGE (Violet): The 26 gauge needle is used in neonates, infants, children, and occasionally in elderly adults. It can be used for infusion but the flow rate is incredibly low due to its small size.
