When the first #shipping containers set sail in 1956, transport costs were as much as 25% of the value of the goods being moved. The standardised container, by drastically cutting transport and labour costs, revolutionised the industry and gave the sea its commercial primacy.

Today, the Physical Internet promises a second industry-wide revolution, built on optimising existing logistics infrastructure through modular packing, standardised interfaces and universal protocols.
In a move to regulate the environmental effects of #shipping, the European Parliament has voted for the inclusion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) by 1 January 2022.
The vote calls for firms to cut the annual average CO2 emissions by more than 40% by 2030 from ships over 5,000 gross tonnes. This effort will enable the sector to contribute to the EU’s trillion-euro push to achieve a climate neutral economy by 2050.
