👌The Reichston is a famous verse melody from the extensive repertoire of the Middle High German proverb poet Walther von der Vogelweide, perhaps the most important German-language poet of the Middle Ages.
The Reichston verses are political statements about the dispute over succession to the throne that raged around 1200 between the Staufer Philipp von Schwaben and Guelph Otto IV. von Braunschweig. Walther von der Vogelweide takes a stand for Philipp and against papal interventions. The entire Reichston is divided into lamentation over the Reich, over the world and the church.
Based on these medieval songs, one can also study the development of the language – and sometimes a similarity with today’s times.
