FC Barcelona announced a huge deal regarding their web3 business today:

"Barça Vision" is FC Barcelona's initiative to integrate all digital content around web3 and blockchain including NFTs and metaverse, which are part of the club’s strategy to build the digital Espai Barça.

The holding company behind "Barça Vision" is "Bridgeburg Invest". Last year, Socios and Orpheus Media each bought 24.5% of the company for 100 million EUR each (total of 49% for 200 million EUR).

Now, LIBERO football finance AG and private investors bought a 29.5% share in the company from Socios and Orpheus Media for a total of 120 million EUR. 9.8% were bought by LIBERO for 40 million EUR, so I conclude that 19.7% were bought by private investors for 80 million EUR.

It was confirmed to me by Alex Dreyfus, the CEO of Socios, that Socios still owns 17.5% of "Bridgeburg Invest". Therefore, I conclude that Socios sold 7% of their shares in the company, while Orpheus Media seems to have sold 22.5% and now only holds 2% of the shares.

Estimated "Bridgeburg Invest" ownership:
51.0% | FC Barcelona
19.7% | Private investors
17.5% | Socios
9.8% | LIBERO
2.0% | Orpheus Media

After this acquisition, it was anncouned that FC Barcelona plans to merge its digital Barça Vision and audiovisual content units under the brand "Barça Media". "Barça Media" is valued at 1 billion USD and is expected to go live on the NASDAQ under the ticker "BRME".

Since the new brand "Barça Media" is valued at 1 billion USD, I estimate that FC Barcelona will own 80% of that brand, while the aforementioned investors in "Bridgeburg Invest", that bought their shares for a total of 200 million EUR, will own a combined total of 20% of "Barça Media".

With the launch of Barca Media, FC Barcelona outlined an important change to football club's revenue in the upcoming years.
Traditional revenue for football clubs is:

1⃣ Matchday
2⃣ Sponsorships
3⃣ Broadcasting
4⃣ Transfers
5⃣ Commercial

A sixth pillar, that will gain more importance in the upcoming years, is:
6⃣ Digital

Current revenue sources for FC Barcelona in the digital sector are:
-> Video on-demand (Barca Studios)
-> Web3 (Barca Vision)
-> Esports (Barca Esports)

This does not only include direct revenue streams from these sectors, but also, and mostly in the case of esports, targeting young audiences that might be more interested in esports than they are in football.

"But is creating a new revenue stream for football clubs even possible and can it hold up in any way with traditional revenue streams?"

Absolutely. Remember that revenue in the 60s for football clubs was mostly matchday revenue. Then sponsorships started to slowly gain importance in the 70s, revenue from broadcasting exploded in the 90s and transfers have made more and more money since the 2000s.

Football is a very competitive business. If one club finds a new stream of revenue, others will follow. The founding of Barca Media and its expected listing on the NASDAQ might be a bigger change for the football business than many people perceive it to be.
