What’s the most annoying orthodontic charlatanism in your view?
What’s the most annoying orthodontic charlatanism in your view?
Anonymous Poll

Gnathology (an idea that there is some ideal condyle-fossa relationship that cures TMDs)
50%
Myofunctional therapy (an idea that jaws can be grown with appliances or exercises)
10%
Airway ortho (an idea that orthodontic treatment without surgical advancement affects breathing)

Magic brackets (an idea that some specific bracket design is better than the other)
Let’s look into the forms of charlatanism above one by one. First, gnathology.
A famous claim by gnathological sects is that Cl II div2 patients have distal position of the condyles due to the retroclined upper incisors. Gnathologists suggest that by adding torque to the maxillary incisors the mandible gets “unlocked” and slides forward.
This erroneous idea was popularized by Ronald Roth, a charismatic American orthodontic gnathologist. Many of his beliefs which he developed in 1970s turned to be false in light of the modern-day scientific data.

Introducing new rubric – Late-night Tuesday clinical pearls
Here is one:
Pea-sized etching for bands
It is a very simple clinical pearl.
When you etch molars to place bands, don’t apply etch all around the teeth, just add a pea-sized drop in the center of the labial surface. This way when you remove the bands your blue composite will easily chip off from unetched surfaces and won’t stick in between the teeth or palatally.
Hope it helps.

Double power chain to tackle stubborn spaces
Sometimes extraction spaces are not getting closed as easily as we wish. In these instances we may try special tricks.
In cases of stubborn extraction spaces I like to use double PC. First I place a regular PC and then add a shorter one from the first molar to the canine. I usually cut 5 or 6 rings of the additional PC, attach one end to the first molar tube, bend it over the canine bracket and attach the end of the PC back to the first molar tube.

Going back to gnathology. Here is a nice article which eloquently debunks popular gnathological myths and legends.
