France plans to reduce livestock numbers to meet climate targets
In order to become climate neutral by 2050, livestock numbers are to be reduced in France. The government plans 25% fewer cattle and 30% fewer pigs to reduce CO2 emissions by 46%.

To achieve its own climate targets, the French government is apparently planning to cut back on livestock. The National Strategy for Decarbonization (SNBC) stipulates that France - like the European Union as a whole - should become climate-neutral by 2050.

In order to reduce agricultural emissions by 18% between 2015 and 2030, the Paris Ministry of Agriculture is now aiming to reduce dairy and suckler cow herds by 13% and 12%, respectively, and sow numbers by 14%. Over the 2050 time horizon, the cattle herd and sow herd are to be reduced by 25% and 30%, respectively, compared to 2015 levels, in order to reduce emissions by 46%.

The head of agricultural policy at Climate Action Network, Cyrielle Denhartigh, confirmed that the herd reductions projected in the decarbonization strategy have not yet been made public.

Meanwhile, Pierre-Marie Aubert of the Paris Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) says the technical assumptions in the strategy are "very optimistic." He fears, however, that the reduction in livestock may not be enough to meet France's climate commitments.

Bob Katter MHR, says a carbon tax on meat, which has been proposed at a United Nations food summit, would shut down Australia’s cattle industry and starve 80 million people alone.

The True Animal Price Protein Coalition proposed a meat tax of a €1 ($1.61) per kilo, at the summit in Rome last week of which Australia is a major sponsor, having contributed $63.9m.

“Almost every single calf that is born in Australia is produced on land that can’t be used for any other purpose,” Mr Katter said.

“I’m not talking about fattening country; I’m talking about breeding country where the cattle are bred. If you introduce that tax and wipe out the cattle industry, then there is 2.4 billion kilos of protein that will no longer be available (Australia on an average year turns off 8 million cattle for consumption, each with 300 kgs of consumable meat). The average family of five eats 150 kg of beef a year,[2] so you are going to starve 80 million people to satisfy your ideology.

“There is no alternative feedstock that can provide such an enormously high protein regime. The staple diets in Indonesia, Europe, Japan, South Korea and South America is meat. You’ve got to eat a lot of rice to get the same protein content that beef provides.”

Stock of Tyson Foods, the world's second largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork after Brazil's JBS S.A., is soaring 9%, hitting an all time high and is one of the S&P's best companies this morning ... after the company reported blowout earnings (thanks to passing on surging food prices) and announced that it is raising prices even more as it grapples with a tight labor market and smaller livestock herds. According to the report, beef prices jumped by 32% in the quarter, with chicken up ~20% and pork 13%.

Chicken producers warn about fast-spreading bird flu spreading across US

US poultry producers are tightening safety measures for their flocks as disease experts warn that wild birds are likely spreading a highly lethal form of avian flu across the country.

Indiana on Wednesday reported highly pathogenic bird flu on a commercial turkey farm, leading China, South Korea and Mexico to ban poultry imports from the state. The outbreak put the US industry on edge at a time that labor shortages are fueling food inflation.

U.S. detects highly lethal bird flu in Tyson Foods chickens

A flock of about 240,000 chickens owned by Tyson Foods Inc in Kentucky tested positive for a highly lethal form of bird flu, government officials and the company said on Monday, widening an outbreak that threatens the U.S. poultry industry.

Infections in the chickens being raised for meat triggered more restrictions on U.S. exports, with China blocking poultry products from Kentucky. Last week, buyers like China and Korea limited poultry purchases from Indiana due to an outbreak at a commercial turkey farm there.

Birds from the infected flock will be culled and will not enter the food system, state officials said.

Tyson Foods is working with government authorities to prevent the disease from spreading and is heightening safety measures at other local farms, spokesman Gary Mickelson said.

The disease was also detected in a backyard flock of birds in Fauquier County, Virginia, that have already been culled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. The cases do not present an immediate public health concern, the agency said.

The United States is the world's largest producer and second-largest exporter of poultry meat.

The disease is hitting the market as poultry supplies are down due to strong demand and labor shortages at meat plants during to the COVID-19 pandemic. Government data showed U.S. frozen chicken supplies were down 14% from a year ago at the end of December while turkey inventories were down 23%.

A federal judge told Miller to cease and desist all meat sales, and sent armed U.S. marshals to search his property, farm store and freezers. They took an inventory of all his meat to make sure he doesn’t sell any or slaughter anymore animals.

Last summer, the judge also ordered Miller to pay $250,000 for “contempt of court,” and said he will also have to pay the salaries of the USDA investigators assigned to his case, $50,000 of which was due last week as a “good faith” payment to avoid jail.
