A prominent stronghold in the heart of Indian subcontinent, Raisen fort has seen a wave of invasions over centuries.

In 1234 AD Illtutmish invaded the region around Raisen and conquered Bhilsa (Vidisha) his armies marched up to Ujjain, where he desecrated the Mahakaleshwar Temple of Lord Shiva.

Cut to 3 centuries later in 1532 AD another army invested the fort, however this time it was not the Sultan of Delhi but the Sultan of Gujarat who was interested in destroying the power of a local chieftain named Silahdi who held the fort at that time. The Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah bombarded the fort and Silahdi in a diplomatic move embraced Islam.

Apparently Silahdi was not convinced with the idea of giving up the fort so easily and through some hooks and crooks re-entered the fort.

THE LEGEND OF MUHAMMAD QULI SHAH AND BHAGYAWATI..
Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah was the fifth sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty of Golkonda and founded the city of Hyderabad in South-central India and built its architectural centerpiece, the Charminar. He was an able administrator and his reign is considered one of the high points of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. He ascended to the throne in 1580 at the age of 15 and ruled for 31 years.
According to the popular legend, Muhammad Quli Shah fell in love with a dancing girl named Bhagyavati or Bhagmati and built a city in her honour, naming it Bhagyanagaram. Qutb Shah met her whilst riding out, fell in love to the extent of having constructed Purana Pul as a means of meeting her regularly, and entered into a marriage.
Accordingly, the sultan founded a city around her birth-place and named it "Bhaganagar" or "Bhāgyanagar" in her honor. However, she was later given the name Hyder Begum and city became Hyderabad.
