🇪🇺 Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the fraudulent presidential elections in Belarus.

On this day three years ago, hundreds of thousands of Belarusians took to the streets to peacefully defend their right to choose their own future. These spontaneous demonstrations were suppressed with extreme brutality by the Lukashenko regime.

Three years later, the situation is worse than ever. The regime keeps stepping up the repression against its own people while surrendering the country’s sovereignty to Russia.

There are now close to 1,500 political prisoners incarcerated in appalling conditions, exposed to ill-treatment and torture, without access to their families and essential health services. People also die in custody or prison.

In coordination with international partners, the EU has imposed seven rounds of sanctions against those responsible for serious human rights violations, and those who benefit from and support the Lukashenko regime.

We have also imposed targeted economic sanctions for the regime’s complicity in Russia’s war against Ukraine and we are fully engaged in holding the regime to account in relevant international organisations.

At the same time, we continue supporting the Belarusian people. We stand by them in their quest for peace and democracy.
