Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov remarked that Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler might have had “Jewish blood” in him, sparking outrage in Israel.
“I may be wrong but Adolf Hitler had Jewish blood too. This means absolutely nothing. The wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews,” he added.
Lavrov’s comments prompted Israel's foreign ministry to summon Russia's ambassador for "clarification" and an apology. Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid took to Twitter to condemn Lavrov’s words as “unforgivable.”
"Foreign Minister Lavrov’s remarks are both an unforgivable and outrageous statement as well as a terrible historical error. Jews did not murder themselves in the Holocaust. The lowest level of racism against Jews is to accuse Jews themselves of antisemitism.”
