Tokyo residents rally to condemn Biden's visit, Quad talks

Protesters rallied in Tokyo on Sunday to condemn a visit by US President Joe Biden who is set to hold talks with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and participate in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) summit with Japan, Australia and India leaders.

"The fact that US President Biden is coming to Japan for a US-Japan summit, and then the Quad meeting, is, after all, a preparation for war, for a war to invade China. So this is a demonstration that we must stop it, crush it, and so we took to the streets to appeal for such an action", said a protester Nagae.

In a major development, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad on Tuesday caught a suspected terrorist from Pune. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, held talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the ongoing QUAD summit. The discussion focussed on deepening the developmental cooperation between India and Australia across diverse sectors. Earlier in the day, both the leaders along with other QUAD leaders launched a fellowship programme that would sponsor 100 students to study science and technology in American universities. 

Japan is not currently planning to join the AUKUS security alliance signed between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, said Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday. However, he noted that Tokyo would develop partnerships with AUKUS member nations. Kishida also hailed the “great importance” of the defence pact which stirred the global political scene last year, especially irking France and China. The trilateral security pact of AUKUS was the first of its kind agreement that witnessed Australia acquiring nuclear-powered submarines. 

US President Joe Biden, during his meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, announced on May 23, that the US will soon put a Japanese astronaut on the Moon under the Artemis Program.
