Indian Army column reached the landslide site at Chooralmala by 1200 hours. Using ropes, soldiers are being ferried across the river which is in spate to assist and carry out rescue efforts in Ward No 10 of Chooralmala.
The Pune-headquartered Southern Command of the Indian Army has mobilised its two rescue columns along with two Indian Air Forceโs (IAF) helicopters from the Sulur Air Force Station in Coimbatore to be deployed in Keralaโs Wayanad district that was rattled by a massive landslide early on Tuesday.
The Armyโs action comes based on Kerala governmentโs request for military help in landslide-hit areas of Meppadi, Mundakkai Town and Chooralmala that left at least 50 people killed and hundreds trapped.
Adverse weather conditions are dampening the rescue efforts as several houses, shops and vehicles are buried under the debris in Mundakkai. A bridge to the spot has been washed away, further complicating rescue efforts.
