• There are 9 SF battalion (1 Para SF, 2 Para SF, 3 Para SF, 4 Para SF, 9 Para SF, 10 Para SF, 11 Para SF, 12 Para SF, 21 Para SF) , and 5 Airborne battalion ( 5 Para, 6 Para, 7 Para, 23 Para , 29 Para) , and 2 TA battalion ( 106 Para, 116 Para) , and 1 RR battalion (31 RR) in Parachute regiment.



1 Para SF

• Also known as " Red Devils "
• Raised in 1761
• Converted to Para SF in 1978
• Specialized in - Urban warfare, Tactical needs, CI & CT
• This is also Strategic Reserve unit.


2 Para SF

• Also known as " Predators "
• Raised in 1797 as 3rd battalion of Maratha LI
• Converted to Para SF in 2000
• Specialized in - Mountain warfare, CI & CT


3 Para SF

• Also known as " Russell's Viper "
• Raised in 1813 as 1st battalion of Kumaon Reg.
• Converted to Para SF in 2002
• Specialized in - Desert warfare, CI & CT


4 Para SF

• Also known as " Daggers "
• Raised in 1961 as Para Airborne unit.
• Converted to SF in 2003.
• Specialized in - Mountain warfare, CI & CT
• The unit also actively took part in Surgical Strikes of 2016.


9 Para SF

• Also known as "Ghost Operators" , "Mountain Rats" , "Pirates"
• Raised in 1966 as 9th Parachute commando battalion (Para SF battalion).
• Specialized in - Mountain warfare, CI & CT
• The unit also actively took part in Surgical Strike of 2016 along with 4 Para SF.
• Operation Mandhol in 1971 war was also carried out by 9 Para SF.


10 Para SF

• Also known as "Desert Scorpions"
• Raised in 1967 as 10th Para Commando Battalion (Para SF battalion) as sister unit of 9 Para SF.
• Specialized in - Desert warfare, CI & CT
• Carried out operation named Chachro Raid in 1971 war. (Objective was to strike enemy position 80 km inside enemy territory , to hit their supply line and create confusion)


11 Para SF

• Also known as " Vipers "
• Raised in 2011 as a New SF unit.
• Specialized in - Jungle warfare, CI & CT


12 Para SF

• Also known as " Dirty Dozens "
• Raised in 2011, from 23rd battalion Rajputana rifles as was designated as SF unit.
• Specialized in - Jungle Warfare, Mountain Warfare, CI & CT


21 Para SF

• Also known as " Waghnaks "
• Raised in 1985, as 21st battalion of Maratha LI
• Converted to Para SF in 1996
• Specialized in - Jungle Warfare, Mountain Warfare, CI & CT
• Myanmar Surgical Strike was carried out by 21 Para SF
