Saw another classic movie a couple of days ago, this time it was my first black and white movie. It's called 12 Angry Men and it was released back in 1957.

The movie is about 12 people on jury duty to decide the fait of a young spanish-american teen on trial for killing his father.

Got a lot of thoughts but let's start with the good ones. Visually it's very beautiful. Honestly I've never ever seen black and white movies and thought it'd not be a nice visual experience but it has an aesthetics of its own specially when it starts to rain it has a beautiful feel to it.

My favorite part about the movie is that it feels like a theatre (and oftentimes it is presented in theatres too). Another thing is that it feels like one continuous shot. From start to finish I'm left there wondering how on earth people aren't missing their lines feeling like it was a one take movie.

Now what I didn't like about it is that it says 12 Angry Men but it's more like 3 angry men, but that's just me trolling. My actual annoyance is with the characters and the way they go about reasoning.

When it comes to the plot the jurors flat out do much more investigation than what the cops do so much so that you're left thinking why are these people architects and mechanics instead of being criminal investigators lol

My main annoyance and frustration is ofcourse the way they were thinking. Part of the main plot was about bias of some of the racist and emotionally biased jurors who think the kid was guilty while infact the people who were arguing that he's no guilty were extremely biased too.

They would quiet literally start with the premise that the teen is not guilty and literally assume so much despite the actual evidence presented to them and not even testing it properly. Not only that but they'd also discard investigating the boy's own story.

What's even worse is that the jurors manufactured motives for witnesses to lie or be mistaken, but did not apply the same skepticism to the defendant's claims which is so biased too.

Other than that there're somethings that you'd notice that are extremely unhealthy like almost everyone smoking and unhygienic things like using the same drying tower in a public bathroom. Which's crazy cause they're showing it like its the best and correct thing life offers back then.

Also the movie has such an Amharic movie vibe to it. The whole respecting your elders thing, the whole educating the public thing about the basics of law and the whole storyline feels like an Amharic movie. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Overall, it's mid at best. But makes complete sense why it's a classic cause I can see lots of people who might enjoy it.

TL;DR

I recently watched my first black-and-white classic, 12 Angry Men (1957), and was impressed by its unique visual style and theatrical, almost one-take feel. The story revolves around 12 jurors deciding the fate of a young Spanish-American accused of patricide.

While the film’s courtroom drama and character dynamics are compelling, I found the jurors’ reasoning frustratingly biased on both sides, with questionable skepticism applied unevenly.

Despite some outdated habits like constant smoking and hygiene issues, the movie’s cultural vibe and legal lessons resonate, making it a classic—though for me, it’s more “mid” than masterpiece.

This is pretty much the most logically sound line in the movie 😂
