Experience House - A retreat for experience designers
At Experience House, an exclusive group of 30 Experience Designers come together to imagine what events could look like in a post-COVID world.
From my buddy @Sam who I have the hopes that he'll create one of the most magical coliving experiences ever.
By the way, I'll be documenting the hell out of it and draw key learnings from it - including, how to create your own spaces, what works bests in terms of facilitation, etc...

EXPERIENCE HOUSE
In February we’re bringing together a group of expe💥rience designers from around the world for a month of coliving in Guatemala. It's an invite-only gathering of facilitators, event producers, technologists, musicians, and more – all of whom share a passion for creating experiences that inspire awe and facilitate human connection. The intention is to gather leaders in this space to spark collaborations, amplify each other's missions, and re-imagine how we gather and connect in a post-covid world
😷 A strict COVID-19 safety policy. We're creating a covid-free bubble where humans can feel like humans again.
🏯 A stunning venue in the Guatemalan jungle, nestled between two volcanos – one of which erupts every 10 minutes. Private rooms, fast WiFI + coworking space, a pool/hot tub/sauna, chef-prepared meals, and nightly family dinners. (I’ll send photos)
🌋 The perfect location. The property is surrounded by hiking & mountain bike trails, is 30 minutes from Antigua, and 1.5 hrs from Guatemala's best surf town. We’ll go on trips to the legendary Lake Atítlan, climb active volcanos, and maybe even produce an event in a ruin? It’s going to be ridiculous.
✨ A culture of co-creation, ask/offer, and experimentation.
We'll have a film team capturing the magic & amplifying the brands, stories, and ideas of the participants.
Confirmed participants include Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter Axel Mansor (axelmansoor.onuniverse.com), poet Max Stossel (wordsthatmove.com) – who works with Tristan Harris at the Center for Humane Technology, the co-founder of House of Yes in NYC Anya Sapozhnikova (bkmag.com/2016/10/05/kae-burke-anya-sapozhnikova-house-of-yes), award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Hiller (hillervisual.com), and speaker Vika Viktoria (vikatalks.com/about-vika/), to name a few.
DATES:
Feb. 13 - March. 14
PRICE:
$2,500 for a private room, all meals, daily housekeeping, and security
The original application deadline was Dec. 11, and all of the original 16 slots have been filled. That said, we’re still accepting applications and exploring the possibility of extending a few more invitations to the right people. If you're interested, apply ASAP as the guest list will be finalized by this Friday Jan. 15.

The ultimate guide to starting a coliving business
I started a coliving business in 2013. We scaled it to 3 spaces in Spain, California, and Portugal. Then we pivoted, and changed the company into a completely different business (company retreats) while still keeping the brand.
Today I was in a call with fellow juries from the upcoming Coliving Awards ceremony (www.colivingawards.com), for which I'm going to be the judge on the "best community and user experience" category.
One of the judges is someone I truly admire and who has helped me a lot in the last years, Matthias Hollwich.
This guy built his architecture firm in NYC long time back. Then, during the 2008 financial crisis, he realized how a lot of architects are struggling. He decided to do something about it and founded architizer.com, a platform where architects can submit their projects, receive awards and accreditation. Kind of a "Behance for architects" for those of you who are in the tech world.
Architizer became on of the most visited websites for architecture in the world, helping a lot of architects finding jobs.
Then, he turned 40 and realized how half his life is gone already. Especially, he started asking himself where he wanted to grow old - and realized how society is not made for people who age!
Which led him to another side-project: new-aging.com
He now incorporates in his architecture the idea of aging in every aspect: how to be able to owjn property over your ageing time, how young and old could actually live together and help each other.
One of his dream projects was this huge tower in New York City, an enormous living space, or rather, co-living tower, which would be multigenerational and allow those who age to live in a vibrant environment - instead of in an elderly home.
He now incorporates in his architecture the idea of aging in every aspect: how to be able to owjn property over your ageing time, how young and old could actually live together and help each other.
One of his dream projects was this huge tower in New York City, an enormous living space, or rather, co-living tower, which would be multigenerational and allow those who age to live in a vibrant environment - instead of in an elderly home.
Remember: people who are becoming old don't want to be surrounded by people who are dying. At least, not me. But in today's society, that's where one puts you - and there are almost no alternatives.
So, all of this to share that we were in the Coliving Awards call today together, when Matthias dropped a thought I wanted to share:
According to a lot of studies, having strong social relationships is one of the core elements to longevity.
And so, we just dropped it: by living in a coliving space with other people you care about, you are actually extanding your life expectancy.
