🛑No more forex for cars, bajajes, furniture and chocolate: National Bank of Ethiopia have decided that it won’t allow foreign currency exchange that is purposed for import of 4️⃣0️⃣ items that NBE likes to be produced locally (or smuggled illegally into the country).

👩🏿‍⚕️First of all, we have to applaud NBE’s focus on making us healthy: sweets, alcohol, cigarettes and cars are unquestionably 🙅🏾bad. Treadmills, weights, vitamins and motivational videos are permitted (so far), so we are 😇good here.

☝🏾On a more serious note: bold statement from NBE confirms two things: Government is serious about forcing local production and Government is serious about “green development” - forex for electric cars and electric bajajes is allowed.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Every parent knows that you need to complement negative reinforcement with positive stimuli.

Young 🇪🇹Ethiopian “green economy” will be thankful for NBE to put 🔆solar at the same forex priority list as 🛢️diesel; establishing provisions for using 🔆solar installations as loan collateral; simplify imports of 🔆solar components and undertaking several other initiatives.

🌞Let us put Ethiopian sun to work for Ethiopian prosperity!

🔴 There is NO African country among members of International ⚡️Energy Agency. The developing world is delegated to a group of “IEA association countries”, but only 3 countries (Egypt, South Africa and Morocco) represent a region of 54 African countries.

🟣 Therefore we should not be surprised to see that IEA’s 524-pages report “World Energy Outlook - 2022” does not really talk about the world but rather about “Global North” - an approximately 20% of world population. “Global North” and especially good old Europe is certainly going through very challenging period, as strong reliance on Russian natural gas have backfired, and there is no easy way around this problem.

🟢 Unsurprisingly, Russia is mentioned ~250 times, natural gas ~350 times and Africa ~150 times. The “World Energy Outlook” talks about energy transitions, climate change, net zero emission pledge, “1.5 degree Celsius goal”, cost inflation, clean manufacturing, and many-many of other concepts. Each concept is supported by data, deep analysis of dynamics and projections, bright infographics, etc.

🟡 When it comes to emerging markets, especially our Sub-Saharan Africa, the difference is striking: no analysis, no data, no quantified predictions. “Energy demand will be huge”, “electricity will take big part in energy consumption”…

✳️ 99.9% of the “World Energy Outlook” is irrelevant for 🇪🇹Ethiopia. We don’t depend on Russian natural gas, we have never bought Russian oil, our emissions are minuscule, “energy transition” has no place in our energy system, as we are yet to develop strong energy supply.

🔆 Solar off-grid large-scale commercial and industrial (C&I) solutions will help 🇪🇹Ethiopia to achieve decentralized energy abundance at scale that is not known to “World Energy Outlook - 2022”.
