Lying in general is not permissible and is a horrible characteristic, however the Prophet salalaahu alayhi wasalam permitted it for someone who is trying to bring reconciliation and make peace between two parties. In this case there is a greater good and the warding off of evil. Having said that, if reconciliation can be achieved without lying then that is better.

O Muslims do not follow the footsteps of the enemies of the sahaba by turning blessed days into days of sadness and mourning!
