On January 10, two French soldiers arrived in the Central African Republic (CAR) without visas, but they had MINUSCA (UN peacekeeping mission in CAR) badges, which, in their opinion, should have replaced documents. The police detained French citizens for further investigation.

Concern was raised by the fact that both soldiers had already been to the CAR before in 2013, as part of the French military mission Operation Sangaris. In light of the recent withdrawal of French troops from the territory of the CAR, such guests seemed very suspicious to the police.

Hundreds attended a demonstration in the capital city of Ouagadougou on January 20th calling for the withdrawal of French troops and the expulsion of the French ambassador to Burkina Faso, Luc Hallade.

Posters featuring Burkinabé president Ibrahim Traoré, Malian President Assimi Goïta, and Russian president Vladimir Putin were held up as the heroes of the demonstrators.

❗️RT France To Close After Accounts Frozen

RT’s French subsidiary will cease broadcasting after its accounts were frozen by the French treasury, its director, Xenia Fedorova, announced on Saturday. Paris claimed that it froze the funds in line with EU sanctions, which targeted RT’s parent company.

"After five years of harassment, the authorities in power have achieved their goal: the closure of RT France," Fedorova said in a statement shared on Twitter. Earlier this week, Fedorova said that she had received a letter from RT France’s bank indicating that the network’s funds had been frozen at the request of the French treasury, rendering it impossible for the outlet to pay its staff.

"Although RT France is not on the sanctions list and has the right to operate in France, such a decision practically paralyzes our activities,” she said at the time.

The French Finance Ministry told AFP that RT France’s assets had been frozen in compliance with the most recent EU sanctions package.

The government of Burkina Faso denounced the agreement that regulates the presence of French armed forces on its territory since 2018.

According to the terms of the agreement of December 17, 2018, this denunciation gives French armed forces one month to leave the territory of Burkina Faso.

For several months, citizens of Burkina Faso have been regularly demonstrating to demand the departure of the soldiers of Operation Sabre, stationed in Kamboinsin, northeast of Ouagadougou. The protesters accuse France of not doing enough to help Burkina Faso, which is undergoing terrorist attacks, and of being in league with the attackers.
