The move to supply the French-made AMX-10 RC to Ukraine -- a light tank model in service since the 1980s that is being phased out in the French military -- represents a significant shift in French military support for Ukraine.

Paris has already delivered state-of-the-art artillery, armoured personnel carriers, anti-aircraft missiles and air-defence systems to Ukraine, but Macron has long been wary of antagonising Russia and breaking off diplomatic contact with Vladimir Putin.

NATO allies have gradually ramped up their military support to Ukraine since February last year, delivering increasingly sophisticated weapons systems while also publicly worrying about the risk of escalating the conflict with Moscow.

Iran announced Thursday the closure of a Tehran-based French research institute in protest against cartoons of the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

🇫🇷🇨🇫 Two French citizens detained at Bangui airport while trying to enter the country without visas

On January 10, two French soldiers arrived in the Central African Republic (CAR) without visas, but they had MINUSCA (UN peacekeeping mission in CAR) badges, which, in their opinion, should have replaced documents. The police detained French citizens for further investigation.

Concern was raised by the fact that both soldiers had already been to the CAR before in 2013, as part of the French military mission Operation Sangaris. In light of the recent withdrawal of French troops from the territory of the CAR, such guests seemed very suspicious to the police.
