🇨🇩🇺🇳 Over 40 killed in east DR Congo after crackdown on anti-UN protest
Over 40 people were killed and 56 wounded in an army crackdown on anti-United Nations demonstrations in eastern DR Congo city of Goma on Wednesday, the government said.
Congolese troops forcibly dispersed the protest against the U.N. peacekeeping mission and other foreign organisations after an attack on a policeman.
Earlier, authorities said the policeman was stoned to death, and that six protesters were killed when the army intervened.
But in a statement on Thursday, the government said the death toll stood at 43, while 158 people were arrested. It said a military investigation had been opened.

The United Nations on Friday demanded an "independent" probe after dozens of people were killed in a crackdown on an anti-UN protest in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
"There needs to be an investigation and the perpetrators need to be brought to justice," UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told.
According to an assessment by the rights office, at least 43 people were killed, including a policeman, and 56 injured, Shamdasani said.
Shamdasani said at least 222 people were reportedly arrested, including women and children, and said that "the risk of human rights violations in such a charged context is high".

An attack on a Chinese mining convoy transporting gold in northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo killed four people, including two Chinese nationals, authorities said.
According to the officials, the assailants stole a “large quantity” of gold from the convoy, which belonged to a Chinese mining company operating in the restive South Kivu province.
Attacks on quarries and mining cooperatives are frequent in the region as more than 120 armed groups compete for land and resources in eastern Congo.

This morning, four armed individuals led by Christian Malaga tried to break into the presidential palace in Kinshasa. After minor clashes, the rebel leader was eliminated, and his accomplices, including one American, were detained. Two police officers were killed in the fighting.
🔻Christian Malaga is another "opposition leader" inflated by the West. Born in Kinshasa, he spent most of his childhood in the USA. As an adult, he built a successful business in his homeland, then turned to politics and created the "United Congolese Party", but after a failed attempt to run in parliamentary elections, he returned to the States.
After that, he became a regular participant in many Western-sponsored NGOs. The pinnacle of his activities was the establishment of the "Government of Zaire in Exile" in Brussels, where he declaimed the "freedom of the Congolese people".
And it is likely that Malaga was counting on such sentiments after the postponement of government appointments, which even half a year after the elections has not been formed. But in the end, he miscalculated and did not justify the expectations of his Western sponsors, who have been increasingly in need of Congolese resources lately.
