🧱🇷🇺 BRICS discussing trade currency, alternative to dollar according to Russian Finance Minister

The BRICS countries are discussing the possibility of creating a common unit of account alternative to the dollar, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told during the BRICS summit.

"This can be a unit of account for the BRICS member countries. Not a single currency like in the EU but an alternative to the dollar, in which the cost of commodity deliveries can be denoted as well as benchmarks for some goods so as not to depend on the single currency or an issuing center that issues banknotes in a no-one-knows-how manner," the minister said.

Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have already expressed his support towards the trade currency for BRICS countries.

🧱🌍 BRICS bank can help African countries tackle urgent challenges said the New Development Bank president

The New Development Bank created by BRICS countries in 2015 can help finance African countries' projects to tackle their most urgent challenges, the bank's president Dilma Rousseff said on Thursday.

The BRICS countries are "good partners" for Africa, former Brazilian President Rousseff said in a speech in Johannesburg, adding the bank would finance physical and digital infrastructure projects in Africa as well as educational ones.

"The New Development Bank has the potential to be the leader of projects that address the most urgent challenges of African countries," she said.

One of the challenges to be overcome "is the expansion of payment mechanisms, notably local currencies and other financial instruments that may eventually be created in order to build a new, more multilateral and inclusive financial system", she added.

🇩🇿🧱 Algeria's President not interested in joining BRICS in current format

Algeria is no longer interested in joining the BRICS economic alliance in its current format, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on Thursday.

"The Algerian economy is highly dynamic, and the country's income from the non-oil sector have exceeded $8 billion, an unprecedented figure since Algeria's independence," Algerian President said.

"BRICS, in its current format, is not of interest to Algeria anymore," he said. "The issue of the BRICS group is completely off the table."

Previously, Algeria officially submitted an application to join the BRICS organization in late July, presenting a request to become a shareholder in the group's bank with an initial $1.5 billion buy-in.

💬 On January 1, Russia was passed the baton of the #BRICS chairmanship, an association which, according to the decision adopted by the 15th BRICS Summit in August 2022, now includes 10 countries.

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates joined BRICS as new full members which is a strong indication of the growing authority of the association and its role in international affairs.

BRICS is attracting an ever increasing number of supporters and like-minded countries that share its underlying principles, namely, sovereign equality, respect for the chosen path of development, mutual consideration of interests, openness, consensus, the aspiration to form a multipolar international order and a fair global financial and trade system, and pursuit of collective solutions to top challenges of our time.

The Russian 2024 BRICS Chairmanship under the motto Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security will act precisely in this manner and focus on positive and constructive cooperation with all countries concerned.
