Christopher Clohessy is a South African Catholic priest who holds a BST from the Pontifical Urbanianum University in Rome and a PhD from the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI), also in Rome. He is at present a resident faculty member of that Institute, lecturing there in Shīʿī Islamic studies, Qur’ānic Studies, Islamic Ethics and Christian-Muslim dialogue, and is visiting lecturer at the Pontifical Beda College in Rome, where he lectures in Fundamental Theology, Ecclesiology, Islam and Mariology. He is author of Fāṭima, Daughter of Muḥammad (2009, 2018 2ND edition), Half of My Heart: The Narratives of Zaynab bt. ʿAlī (2018) and Angels Hastening, The Karbalaʾ Dreams (2021), and The Outrider: Abu al-Fadl al-'Abbas (2024), all published by Gorgias Press. In 2021 he was one of the recipients of the Iranian World Book Award, with the nomination ‘Distinguished Researcher’.

Immediately after the assasination and martyrdom of Imam Ali (a.s.) in Ramadan 40AH (Jan. 661AD) his son and the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.) Imam Hasan (a.s.) was chosen by the people of Kufa and with the support of the people of Hijaz (Mecca and Medina), Yemen and Basra as the next Caliph of the Islamic world. Only opposition came from Muawiya son of Abu Sufyan the archenemy of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.) who was in control of Syria and Egypt.

Imam Hasan's reign was brief and ended in Aug. 661AD with his abdication in favor of Muawiya in accordance with their peace treaty.

His abdication is one of the most important events in the history of early Islam with important theological implications for both shia and sunni. As the well known sunni Egyptian scholar Jalaluddin Suyuti has put it Hasan (a.s ) was the last of the rightly guided caliphs and after him with Muawiya and Umayyads the caliphate changed to kingship.

In the first lecture of these two lecture series we looked briefly to the political and social conditions at the time Imam Hasan was chosen as the caliph and the events after that which lead him to accept the peace proposal by Muawiya, including the details of two of the letters which was exchanged between the them.

In the second lecture of these two lecture series we discussed in more details the events which during Imam Hasan's military march and campaign against Muawiya led him to the decision to accept Muawiya's peace proposal and abdicating himself. Among these events were mutiny by his army, plundering his tent, tearing his clothes from his shoulder and later failed assassination attempt by a Kharijite which injured Imam and defections from the 12000 man vanguard of Imam's army to the Muawiya's side.

In continuation we also discussed in more details the articles of the peace treaty between Imam Hassan and Muawiyah and tried to clarify some confusions regarding the contents of the peace treaty.

Lectures presented during this year month of Ramadan at MIT, dedicated to Imam Hasan al-Mojtaba, peace be upon him.👆

چکیده:
در اين سلسله درسگفتار به موضوعات زير پرداخته ايم:

۱) بعد از رحلت پيامبر اعظم (ص) مسلمانان چه تصوری از جايگاه پيامبر در مدينه داشتند؟ مفهوم جانشينی/ خلافت پيامبر چگونه شکل گرفت و نقش فتوحات در ساختن آن چه بود؟ ۲) مسلمانان بلافاصله بعد از رحلت پيامبر (ص) چه نسبتی ميان قدرت و حاکميت بر سرزمين اسلام با دين و مرجعيت دينی/ وحی/ طاعت دينی بر قرار می کردند؟ ۳) قتل عثمان و عصر "فتنه" و حوادث بعد از آن چه تأثيری در تحول مفهوم خلافت گذاشت؟ ۴) نقش دوران خلافت امير المؤمنين و همچنين حادثه کربلا در شکلگيری مفهوم تازه ای از جانشينی پيامبر (ص) و شکلگيری مکتب اهل بيت در برابر مکتب سقيفه/ خلافت چه بود؟ ۵) مفاهيم سياسی/ دينی "جماعت"، "طاعت"، "سنت"، "شورا"، "اولوا الأمر" و برخی مفاهيم ديگر در زمينه تحولات سياسی دو قرن اول مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. ۶) نسبت بين دين و قدرت در ساخت نظام حقوقی و فقهی دستگاه خلافت تا عصر شافعي مورد بحث قرار گرفت و درباره تحول تدريجی مفاهيم و منابع شریعت و اراده معطوف به قدرت خلفاء در اين زمينه مفصلا بحث شد؛ از جمله بحث درباره سیر تاریخی بحث از منابع فقه (قرآن، سنت، اجماع، اجتهاد الرأی، قياس). ۷) تأثير دوران خلافت حضرت امير (ع) و حادثه کربلاء در شکل دادن به فلسفه دينی/ سياسی متمایزی که در آن معانی تازه ای برای جانشينی پيامبر (امامت)، سنت پيامبر (ص) و نقش حکومت در اداره جامعه شکل گرفت و مخالفت با حاکميت دستگاه خلافت مشروعیت یافت مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. ۸) از سه جريان اصلی در دويست سال اول اسلام بحث کرديم: ۱) جريان اصلی دستگاه خلافت، ۲) جريان مرجعيت اهل حديث و "سنت" / جريان ادبيات " احکام السلطانية" (که با وجود پذيرش "طاعت" خليفه در امر سياسی به تدريج مرجعيت دينی و يا اراده معطوف به قدرت او در دخالت در امر دينی و شريعت را به چالش کشيد) و ۳) جريان مکتب اهل بيت (ع)/ تشيع امامی.
