Wow, the live session about Reading strategies was fire πŸ”₯

We learnt about 3 pillars of IELTS Reading - the basis with which you will be able to solve any question on the test, worked with an authentic text with modern language about technology, trained many questions with explanations.

So much learning and improvement! I keep getting comments from members of the IELTS Reading bootcamp that they have tried the strategies and visibly improved results! 🌟

For those who did not catch the live stream, I share its recording - https://youtu.be/cWiGnOZt4Gc

πŸ’ 'ALWAYS' FOR EMPHASIS?

Sometimes we want to stress something in a sentence. In order to put additional emphasis on a phrase, you can use the adverb 'always' in the beginning of the sentence, before the main verb. Usually this expression has a negative connotation - especially when highlighted in pronunciation.

πŸ’¬ He always eats seafood, but it's damaging his health!

πŸ’¬ My father always works late on Thursdays - I never get to see him!

The annoyance can be further underscored using Present Continuous with 'always' (which is a wild mix that is used almost exclusively for expressing annoyance):

πŸ’¬ He is always using my toothbrush, I can't stand it!

πŸ’¬ My rommate is always losing the keys, it's unbearable!

🌼 Paraphrase "I DON'T UNDERSTAND"

What talking to a person whose speech is not clear, instead of saying the usual, boring and basic "I don't understand" try to incorporate these phrases:

🌼 I am not following
β€” literally: I am not following your train of thought, I am lost in your arguments or ideas.

🌼 I did not catch that
β€” literally: I didn't catch the meaning.

🌼 Sorry, come again?
β€” literally: repeat what you said again.

🌼 Sorry, what did you say? / I beg your pardon!
β€” perfect for politely showing that you don't understand and want the speaker to repeat.

🌼 Hey, slow down!
β€” informal! You can say this to a friend so that they slow their speech and talk more clearly.

🌼 Hold on, what?
β€” informal! This will show that you didn't understand the last sentence.
