German artist Otto Ubbelohde's 1910 illustrations for the Grimm Brothers story "Eisenhans" ("Iron Hans" or "Iron John"). "Eisenhans" is about a boy who frees a "wild man" and is then taken under his tutelage and learns how to become a man. The wild man tests the boy by making him guard a magic golden well, but the boy fails when he leans over to look at his reflection one day and his long hair accidentally falls in, making the gold seep through and turning his hair radiantly blond. The wild man then forces the boy to go out into the world and learn hardship, but offers his future assistance if ever needed. The boy finds work at a castle, and tries to hide his golden hair by always wearing a cap, but the princess sees it from her window one day when he takes it off to cool down while working in the garden.

When war breaks out, the boy tries to join the men, but is mocked and given a three-legged horse, so he visits the wild man, who gives him a super-steed, armor, and a battalion of backup, and effectively helps turn the boy into a killing machine who beats back the invasion, wins over the princess, and inherits the kingdom.

It is one of the most undervalued tale by the Grimm Brothers, and thoroughly Germanic, and should be mandatory reading for every 12-year-old white boy.
