All Western alphabets derive from the West Semitic Phoenician alphabet, even Runic alphabets like the Elder Futhark and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. If you reverse the Greek and Latin you can see the inversions in the Phoenician equivalents. Associating letters with nouns (like children are taught to do today — "A" is for "apple," "B" is for "boy," etc.) is a mnemonic device that was used to spread writing, mostly for economic and administrative purposes ("A" is for "alpha" just doesn't have the same ring). The names of the Runic "Futhark" and "Futhorc" are combinations of the first initials of the first five letter-nouns, as you can see in the far right column (the last letter "C/</h" is excluded).
