Finally, more are addressing concerns with the sexualisation of our children.

‘This book is Gay’ written by Juno Dawson aimed at 13 years upwards contains chapters entitled ‘Doing the Sex’, ‘Pro sex app’ and ‘The Great Sex app debate’. The contents include how two women can pleasure themselves using fingers, oral and strap ons. It also informs you how to set up a sex app and upload a pic of yourself and advertises Grindr as an example.

Waterstone’s manager stated the target market for this book is 12/13 years old and displayed in young adult age group. The age of consent is 16. This is a safeguarding concern and under section 10 of the Sexual Offence Act 2003, you are committing an offence if a person aged 18 or over causes or incites a child to engage in sexual activity. The person would be personally liable. See below.

Sexual Offences Act 2003

Section 10- Causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity

(1)A person aged 18 or over (A) commits an offence if—

(a)he intentionally causes or incites another person (B) to engage in an activity,

(b)the activity is sexual, and

(c)either—

(i)B is under 16 and A does not reasonably believe that B is 16 or over, or

(ii)B is under 13.

(2)A person guilty of an offence under this section, if the activity caused or incited involved—

(a)penetration of B’s anus or vagina,

(b)penetration of B’s mouth with a person’s penis,

(c)penetration of a person’s anus or vagina with a part of B’s body or by B with anything else, or

(d)penetration of a person’s mouth with B’s penis,

is liable, on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 14 years.
(3)Unless subsection (2) applies, a person guilty of an offence under this section is liable—

(a)on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum or both;

(b)on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 14 years.

Grindr is a geolocation-based social networking application for the LGBTQ+ community. You can chat with folks via Grindr’s messaging platform, and even send photos, video and voice messages.’

Would you be happy for your 12 year old to upload Grindr, who could they potentially be speaking with and arranging to meet? Grindr states it’s minimum age is 18.

Grindr and Waterstones have both been emailed raising safeguarding concerns and potentially criminal offences under section 10 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

I am contacting you with regards to the above book, which is listed under the Children’s Books in your stores and online with a target audience of 13-18 year olds.

On pages 162-163 it talks about how to use sex apps and refers to Grindr as an example. Grindr is an over 18 dating site and minors could potentially be signing up to this site and being exposed to adult content and activities.

I feel that this needs to be drawn to your immediate attention due to child safeguarding concerns and criminal offences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, section 10; Causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, which if liable, on conviction, could lead to imprisonment.
